Lost an old friend this week ..

Lost an old friend this week .. Ray Scoggins 74 years old AHRA and NHRA record holder in super stock .. I met Ray when i was 17 years old in living in Texas , Ray turned me on the 426 Hemi and the world of Drag racing.. Ray owned a Factory light weight 1967 426 Hemi Car known as " Big Iron " .. Later he built a Super stock hemi duster know as " Big Iron 2 "

On to the sad part .. Ray owned a new 2010 STR8 Hemi Challenger and took two friends for a ride to show them how the new Hemi runs .. His friend set in the frount seat while his friends girl friend in the back seat ( all wearing seat belts ) He went out to FM 709 for a ride in a new hemi car .. Police said his speed was around 150 MPH when he lost controll and left the road and hit a culvert .. The car flipped 5 times before coming to a stop .. Ray and his friend in the frount seat were killed on impact .. The girl in back seat was air lifted to Dallas .. It is unknown to me if she made it , but from what i heard from friends it's not likely she will ,We pray that she will pull though.. Police said the impact was so hard it tore the seat belts bolts right out of the floors ..

Ray was a Pro and didn't do much if any street racing even in his youngers years ..He made a mistake and took the lives of his friends as well as his own ..Ray was a very nice guy and a friend to all he met .. He never turned you down if you needed help .. It is sad to see Ray go out this way and i'm sure he never wanted to take anyone with him .. But it happened and there are no do overs ..

To all you guys still street racing let this be a lesson to you , please take it to the track because i don't want to read about any more of my friends getting killed .. You see even a Pro can die on the street and you might just take a few people with you ..Things happen so fast you just don't have the time to react when things go bad .. On a motorcycle you have even less time to react ..

Please guys think about this before doing something like street racing .. Never think this can't happen to you because it just may ..

R.I.P Ray ..

Its a sad day to lose a friend, and even worse when he never meant to take his friends with him.... very sad.

This is a very sad story but it is one I am glad to read about. It is stories like this one that people learn from.
I am saddened by your loss .
He sounded like he was a good friend and a person who loved speed to the very end.
Very tragic it was that he took 2 people with him . This story could have had a happy ending but instead it serves as a warning to all who read it that speed can kill you no matter what your skill level or age.
In this world you are not totally safe anywhere or doing anything. Tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. But safety should be 1st at anything you do especially when others are to be involved .
Street racing or Racing at a track are both very dangerous. One has people that can be hurt or killed that aren't even involved, the other has people that are willing to put their lives on the line and spectators aren't spared the danger of being hurt or killed themselves.
Speed wisely , if that makes any sense.

Damn, Lee. That is a very sad story. All you can do is spread the story, and it may save someone one day. I can tell you that years ago I had an ex girlfriend get killed by someone who fell asleep at the wheel. That event has really changed the way I look at things, and the risks that I am willing to take. It's not just those who die who are impacted...the people who probably suffer the most are the loved ones.

Thanks for posting this.

Tanks for sharing the post. His loss was the same as Kenny Poppell, a great driver, it can happen to anyone.
These guys posting videos of runnig 150+ mph with everyone standing along the side of the road, this should be a wakeup call.

Yes Lee this is a very sad story and one in which I am glad I read, there has been many times on the street that I have taken my bike or car out on the HWY and let it lose. Since I have aged I am thinking more about my decisions as should all, I agree with most on here and if you want to see what your bike can really do take it to a track this has really hit me hard.... I think all should read this story as I am going to use this story for all my Soldiers if no one objects. Lee sorry for you loss and to the sport of racing we should all be affected by this because I am sure we have all done something similar and have been fortunate to make to a destination safely or have lived to tell about it now we are having to be the mouths for Mr Scoggins.

Wifes nephew partied all night missed a turn and killed a female friend and crippled himself. I would hate to live with taking someone else out. That said I think you need to be responsible and know your limits of ability and age as well. I know I am not as good as I used to be and try to adjust accordingly.

Sorry to hear this Lee. A local Racer Ed Mabry(74) passed away this last wek too. He was a popular guy with his roots in Drag Racing and LSR....Bonnivelle. He feel in his shop in Haltom City and hit his head. He built a lot of old Triumphs and was a Mechinal Engineer at Bell Helicopter here in Fort Worth. May they both R.I.P.
