Cummins or Duramax? My wife and I are thinking about a new truck. I like diesels, and I wouldn't touch any of the 6.0 stuff with a 10 foot pole.
So what do you think,
03-07 cummins
or
Duramax?
edit: Very cool news, it looks like efi live will be offered for the cummins motors soon!
What kinda power can each motor make *reliably* with exhaust, tune, and intake? I believe the duramaxs can hit about 450 whp pretty easily. Is that correct? How much can power can the stock allison take? I don't want to dump TOO much into this truck, but it would be cool to have a 13 second truck!

Gilbert unless your pulling a huge trailer why not get a gas job and save some $$$$. I just picked up a tundra and love it. The 5.7 hustles and manages to get 13-14 mpg around town if you can keep your foot out of it. rated to tow 9600lbs also.

Cummins turbo would be my pick they have been getting 800.000 + miles out of those Dodge truck motors .Did hear that the Chevy Alison tranny may be tougher than the Dodge trannys though.

Cummins is the beast of the bunch, and i'm a ford guy.
Not impressed with the chevy at all.
2000 7.3 180K miles and 2005 6.0 with 220K miles.

if you buy a cummins with a auto be prepared to upgrade the trans. that's were im at with my truck i need a new torque converter when mine was turned up it would just slip. I would but a stick.

It is very expensive to make a reliable 13 second deseiel pickup. The auto trans do not handle the torque well, real mods are very expensive.
Go with the 5.7 tundra! That thing is powerful and reliable! You can opt for the TRD supercharger and shame most any mustang, wrx, f150 lightning, and surely any lumpy smokiing crude diesel truck with 504 hp and 550 lb-ft tq! And still carry a factory warranty! Try getting Cummings to warranty a banks package or juce box junk programer that destroyed the motor lol
Tundra with TRD supercharger, 0-60 4.? Depending on traction 1/4 just 13.5 seconds and it's in the rear mirror. And drive it every day, still be covered by factory warranty.

Tundras have got to be the most awful looking truck ever built. I liked the first gen, but the second gen makes my eyes bleed. Plus their mileage sucks, and their resale isn't as good.

I agree, but damn there powerful! See if the chevy dealer will drop a supercharged toyota 5.7 and the auto 6 speed from the tundra! lol

when i see a toyota pulling a 40ft gooseneck trailer with 15.000 lbs of load at 70mph ...then just maybe they will have something .. even the toyota service people drive 1ton fords around here as their service trucks

I got 23 mpg going upstate to hunting camp with my cummins i would like to see a 5.7 gas pig do that. The ford ps7.3 that we use at work gets around 15-17mpg.

Gilberjj said a 13 second truck sounded cool, Thats why I sugested the tundra, it can easily and Reliably rip off a 13 second 1/4 mile's, and last 300K Show me a 13 second diesel that last more than 40k without toasting a stock auto trans.
Dont get me wrong, diesel is the way to go if your hauling the heavy load every day, but going fast for your dollar is still involves sparkplugs.

Before I decided to go to College, I was a OTR Dedicated truck driver hauling GM parts from MI to Mexico so our American cars and trucks could be assembled there, lol still blows my mind. Anyways seeing this passing comparison is a joke, If I was able to drive the better part of a million miles with my rig, taking the better part of a mile to pass slower traffic and not having any issues with safe passing, well that just shows how rediculous these tests are, wait for a safe time to pass, not just enough room like in this test. Burn a gallon of fuel, just to be 10 seconds ahead of where you just were and stuck behind the next Real Big truck in your little toy truck.

Wish they would make the Ford body with the Cummins engine and the Allison tranny....now that would be a beast!!!
Personally, I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 5.9 cummins and love it. Only 152,000 on it so far, but looking to double or even triple that. Plan on running it till the body falls apart. Pretty sure the engine will outlast the body.
Still using the stock dual-batteries, and only maintenance so far has been 2 sets of front brake pads, and had to replace the stock fuel lift pump. But that is absolutely it other than on 3rd set of tires. K&N filter and Bully Dog Power-Pup programmer set on tow/economy mode and get 21 MPG and 14 MPG when towing 20 ft enclosed trailer. Running Amsoil fully synthetic oil also.

like i said a trip with the cruse set my truck is a 96 no emission bs no cat or muffler set up for mpg not power. I usually get 17-19 around town. thats good for a 3/4 ton truck with ex cab eight foot bed 4x4.
