Need Advise on Gearing for SWB
I am going to ride my 09 SWB this year to see how it goes. While I have been racing stretched bikes since 02 I have very little experience at SWB. I raced my 04 zx10 stock length a handfull of times waiting for Trac Dynamics to get around to building me an arm. That was not a pretty sight. Damn thing might as well have been a two stroke dirt bike leaving the line! What gear would you guys reccomend for a 155-160 lb rider. Bike will be strapped and lowered with three hole links. Muzzys pipe, fly's out, BMC filter, and will be mapped by Ryan.

I liked stock better than 16/41. Dropping one down in the front made it wheelie a lot more and I didn't get any faster.

Do you guys think the 14 is that wheelie prone that stock gearing is best for SWB?............maybe because i'm at 4500 feet its not as wheelie prone......but I liked a little more gearing.

Dropping a tooth in front was the biggest mistake I made when starting out on the 14. I'm 260 in gear, and I ran a 10.74 first time out. Then I dropped to a 16T, dropped 30lbs and added almost 20hp with Brocks exhaust, and I went backwards on my times. I fought with the thing like a wild animal. VERY good jockeys would race my bike and say it was one of the hardest they had ridden. I should have left it stock at SWB. Now, if my bike was SWB, I would run 17/40, like smokin said.

I have run 16/41 at stock wheel base and was able to run 6.0s in the 1/8 mile but i was allways fighting wheelys ... I switched back to stock and that helped me get into the high 5.90s ... I found out Ricky G was running 17/40 and Brock was running the same 17/40 gears on his ZX14 ... So i gave it a try and ran my best ever passes ( 5.80s ) at stock wheel base .. Now you need to understand my setup may or may not be the best for someone else , we all need something a bit different to fit our riding style or skill level .. You may have to try a few different gears to see what works for you ..

I ran my bike at stock wheelbase quite a bit. I had best luck with 16/41. I weighed 230 lbs unsuited at the time, and the extra gear helped me get out of the hole. However, now that I've had more experience racing my bike, I think I'd actually do better with stock gearing. I think short gearing helps when you're not as good, but then as you get better, I've found that I dont need the short gearing to go fast. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the help guys, I always try to error on the side of caution. I have seen first hand what happens when guys get too aggressive. I guess the good thing is sprockets are not that expensive. A plus side to dropping a tooth on the rear would be free wheelbase. I am looking forward to it, should be fun.

I'm running a 16/40 combo and I just got the bike down to a 9.61 @ 151.3 weighing in at 225 in leathers. It's a winning set up for me.
