Shori Battery Died
The bike started up fine. The display never read more than 12.8v. I rode about 15 miles and the Shori (lfx18l1-bs12) Battery died. It slowly lost voltage until the bike started cutting back. I cut the bike off and it wouldn't start back. Any Ideas of what my problem may be?

Check your connections, including the grounding path.

Is this from first fit?

As I recall, you made enquiries about getting the Shorai quickly.
Was this because the origional battery had packed in?
Sounds like something in the charging system has gone AWOL!
Time for the multimeter.

Connections are clean and tight. At this piont, I think the problem may be in the charging system as the bike never read over 12.x volts.
The LFX18L1-BS12 is the same as the LFX18A1-BS12 except for the terminals are reversed. This is not a problem because the battery is so small it can be turned around and hooked-up correctly. I need to know what steps to take to check the charging system. Thanks for the replies.

This is how you check the stator.
At the regulator under the right side cover near the rear, you will find the regulator. There is a plug with 3 yellow wires. Unplug it and with a meter set to the 200V ~ A/C scale, meter the wire coming from the harness, not the regulator. With the bike running at about 4000 rpm, you should read about 51 volts A/C between yellow to yellow. There will be 3 measurements. L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L1 to L3 That is how to test the stator.
Be sure to have the meter set on A/C and NOT D/C
You can also ohm the stator. The readings should be between 0.1 to 0.5 ohms between yellows. Again there will be three readings. The ohm meter should read infinity to ground from any of the yellows. When you ohm it, the bike should NOT be running.
There is a procedure to check the diodes in the regulator/rectifier unit. The only problem with that is the readings are seldom exactly close to what the book states.
If the readings on the stator appear to be OK, plug it back in and probe the wires with your meter leads until you get a reading. Under load, those 51 volt A/C readings should drop to about 15 volts or so. I mention this because the last bike I worked on, which happened to be a 14, had a bad stator that tested good until it was put under a load, then it failed. That was a biatch to find.
If everything test OK on the stator then it almost certainly is the reg/rectifier unit.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Suzuki Charging System Failure Recall
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a heads up:
"If you’ve bought a Suzuki motorcycle in the past few years, you might want to check out the list for the Japanese company’s latest motorcycle recall. Affecting 73,426 motorcycles from various product lines and model years (2008-2010), Suzuki has discovered a faulty electrical rectifier/regulator in its design that needs replacing.
According to the recall, rectifiers/regulators on bikes built between July 2007 and September 2009 have an inadequate amount of adhesion between the power module and the case, which results in the unit not sufficiently being cooled by its heat sink (affected Suzuki part numbers are: 32800-41F11, 32800-15H10, 32800-05H11, 32800-41G10, 32800-15H00, 32800-18H00, 32800-05G10, 32800-10G10, 32800-05H20, OR 32800-06G01). As a result the unit’s circuit board could warp, and become dislodged from its casing.
Should the rectifier/regulator start malfunctioning because of this condition, the motorcycle would improperly charge its electrical system, likely draining the battery, and possibly causing the motorcycle to stall. Suzuki will notify owners affected by the issue, and a Suzuki distributor will replace the affected part for free. The recall is expected to take place March 2, 2011, the affected models are listed below. Concerned Suzuki owners can contact Suzuki 1-714-996-7040, and as always the NHTSA is available at 1-888-327-4236 or at the safercar.gov website."
