What to expect
I've been thinking about painting my bike this summer and since I've never had a bike painted I was wanting to know what was a reasonable price. I've heard anywhere from $700 to $2200 from people I've talked to, but $2200 seemed high to me, but maybe I'm wrong. The paint job I have in mind is nothing fancy or over the top, just a change in color from the black/orange se to probably some shade of green, orange, or blue.

Make sure you get to see some of the painters previous work then you have an idea of how yours will look.
A bike that has been done by the painter that has been done in the past 2 years that also has been ridden regular would be best then you can see how the paint stood up.
But typically for a way out custom paint job with graphics or murals will be around 3k for the top notch show stuff. Simple 2 tone or single color show quality stuff will be 1500 or 2k tops.

Ok, thanks. I've talked to three different people so far and I've heard $700, $800, and $2200. I haven't seen any of there work yet though. I just thought it was weird to have such a difference between the three.

It really depends on the painter and how he's setup. For example, say there's a show quality painter who works solo out of his garage , one has a huge shop and a lot of employees , and one has a a small shop with a few employees.
All the above will affect prices .
The 2 people i use for my shop do show quality stuff, and one has a small operation and does mild to wild or single simple colors. He varies 1k to 3k .
My other painter does show quality work out of his garage but only does single color stuff and he charges $500.

I would be more interested in the type of paint used how many coats will be for the price. Do they have a dry & paint room.

I am thinking of getting the China ABS kit for 600.00 then I only have to deal with the tank. The air brushed flame one on ebay looks good.

Find out what paint is used and make sure it is what is being used. A lot of places are using cheap stuff and saying they aren't.
Also question the painter about his work, does he strip all the old paint off or does he sand a bit then paint over the old paint? The latter is better. How many coats of clear does he use? The more the better IMO.
Does he stand by his work ? If he does then find out to what extent.
House of Color paints are IMO the best out there.
You get what you pay for.

Also expect to take all the body parts yourself cause most places wont touch your bike. Some cases parts need to stay on and they need the bike cause of graphics and murals need to match up when everything is bolted together.
Also might sound like overkill but it's better to be safe than sorry. Take pics of all your parts before you give them to the painter , try to get all the mounting tabs in the pics too . So that way there's less argument of "oh that's how I got the parts."

Another thing is about the mounting screws , the ones that are in direct contact with the paint.
The paint will be very easily damaged and soft for up to a year. So when tightening the screws , don't tighten them up too tight and once you tighten them down back them off a little bit to prevent the paint from twisting under the screws.
A lot of people never do this and make a mess of a perfect paint job.

Report back with pics when you're done!
And plastic washers or not ,back the screws off after you tighten them . You will not see any damage at 1st if you don't, but the paint will eventually twist under the screws I promise you that.

Taking extra precautions to help protect a valuable paint job is the goal. Who said anything about loose screws? I said tighten the screws up then back them off a little. And by little I mean like less than an 1/8 th of a turn.
All this is doing is releasing the tension that is put on the paint when tightening.
If you ever used the rubber wellnuts on thes bikes you'll know that backing a screw out that little will not cause the screw to fall out.
If your screws / bolts fall out it's cause you don't do your pre ride checks like you are supposed to!

I think Lee has a loose screw dont take advise from a two bit garage hak without a second opinion. Backing off bolts is a bad idea in my opinoin on high performance sport bikes. Lee haked my bike and will never touch Her again
