Hey Lee or anyone- what on earth kind of socket will fit the counter shaft nut. It is square with flattened off corners. I don't know what to use and the SM doesn't recommend a special tool.

I could have sworn that it was the same socket size as the rear axle nut.
Could you post a pic of it? For some reason I'm drawing a blank !

DogoZX-Accurate link!
Rook- make sure you flatten that clip/washer before trying to remove the nut! I use a flat head and hammer/tapping

I see now the square shaped end of the shaft IS NOT what I want to turn on (don't worry, I didn't).
Thanks, Dogo for digging that link up. That is very helpful. From what I read in the thread it is a 27mm 6 point impact socket that will get 'er done. That, or a 1 1/16" 6 pt impact socket which is a tiny bit larger but should fit. Also, a 35mm 6 pt socket is recommended as a possible fit if you use the lager hex that the washer is bent up against..
Here is a pic. You can see there is the square end of the shaft which is not for turning with a wrench--the hex below it which If my guess is correct, the 27mm will fit ---and the large hex at the back against the sprocket which must be the 35 mm. This is all one piece.
I believe the largest flats are there just to bend the washer against. The other hex has higher edges and seems more appropriate to turn on with a socket. SO I will be off to find a hardened 27 mm 6 pt with a 1/2" drive to fit my 32" long 1/2 drive breaker bar. I really hope I do not have to come up with an impact wrench and compressor.
Since we're on the topic, does anyone recall if this is a reverse thread nut? -- Turn clockwise to remove?

Rook it's a normal thread. Counter clockwise to remove. A 1 1/16 will work just fine, just use a old slot screw driver and a small hammer and flatten the lock washer off the nut.
I had my wife push on the rear brake and I used my break over bar with 2 foot length of pipe over the bar handle for more leverage. Came off easy that way. I had a spare nut and new washer just in case I screwed up.

The chain recommended for a ZX-14 is 530 pitch. I got a Vortex 530 pitch 45T rear sprocket to go with it. Just ordered the OEM 17T output sprocket.....I assume the OEM sprockets are 530 pitch since that is what chain pitch is recommended for the ZX-14.
Is the OEM output sprocket pitch going to work with my new 530 pitch chain and 530 pitch rear sprocket?

stock counter sprocket is 530 pitch, 17t.
stock rear sprocket is 530 pitch, 41t.
stock chain is 530 pitch, 116 link.
So yes

Slow down Rook! You're going to need a longer chain if you want to go 45T.

I'm pretty sure he ordered a 130 link chain. That'll be more than enough for 17/45 swb.

I had one disappear and then spit the chain out on my ZRX dragbike. The previous owner had the clip master link in it. Never again!!
funny, that was my ZRX street and dragbike and it ran flawless for me with over 2000 passes. Clip links can be just fine if maintained properly. Obviously with a swingarm change, you must have installed it wrong.

Of he removed it and reinstalled it too many times making less then a press fit .
If I had to use a clip link for ease of removal I would replace it after taking it off the 1st time so I can be sure that the press fit stays the same.

Already got a sweet deal ona 130 pin ZZZ. 530 pitch to match my new 530 pitch Vortex 45T. Been thinking this through for months....but you know--the first time you do things there always a few surprises.

Thanks everyone for all the guidence. Great advice. Wish me luck on the 2x4 in the rear wheel and the pipe on the breaker bar. Got a cheap $6.00 1 1/16" impact socket----27 mm not to common in the US.

Thanks, I'm off--- to o,o,o O'rilley's.
Back now.
ALRIGHT---I'm getting to picky. Orielley had a 6pt deep well 27 mm for 1/2" drive but but it was not hardened steel. I bought it, took it home, there was absolutely no difference in fit between that and the 1 1/16" I had picked up ealier. They both have a little slop. If you can't find a 27 mm, 1 1/16 is the same thing as far as I can tell.

The counter sprocket nut was not too bad to get off. The rear sprocket nuts were a lot harder to break loose. i almost levered the bike off the stand. That would have made this a very expensive chain/sprocket swap.

Ya--think I learned my lesson. SM says to remove the sprocket nuts after the wheel comes off but I don't see how I would have done that without an impact wrench.
Any other newbs doing this,.........push down when wrenching on the back wheel area---carefully. You lift hard---you gonna tip. Perhaps arranging the wrench so that it is close to 12 o'clock would be safest for breaking a stubborn nut loose. HUh- I actually used my foot on the wrench a couple times...and I'm not a monkey--LOL.
The first time I had tires changed, the shop guy told me they had to remove my sprocket. I think that explains why the nuts were torqued so hard. That's 1/3 of the reason I don't ever bring the bike to a shop for any reason other than to change tires. The other 2/3 are economy and because I like to wrench.

Sounds like you did the job well. A flat rate mechanic used an impact instead of a torque wrench. There would be no way to hold the wheel tight enough unmounted to get those bolts of without an impact.

I must of did my clip style wrong on my ZRX1100.I went down the road and gave it some gas and it came apart wrapped around the rear turnsignal bounced off the ground and landed on my right shoulder.Sure glad I wasn't doing a wheelie.I lived on a hill and had to wait for the next day for help to push it up.Ordered a motion rivet tool and a pin kit.Worked great but I broke that piece of crap motion kit the first time.

Holy shit that sucks! Good to hear you didn't have a catastrophic event unfold.
I hate the motion pro tool. It broke so many press pins at my shop so I made it a 2 piece press pin, part of the broken piece and a pin from a did chain ground down to fit and press press the pins out . Works the way it should now.
