Shimming the clutch
The easiest way to check to see if your clutch is down. Pull the oil cap Off, look in at the clutch basket, the outside of the clutch basket should be even with the outside edge of your pressure plate where it drops over, on a factory stock clutch. If your pressure plate is in past the outside of your clutch basket you should shim it. If you use shams you should put them on the top side of the spring closest to the factory bolt and washer. The cheapest shim kit out there is at your local hardware store. You can use a half-inch lock washer at a cost of about $.25 each, put the lock washer in a vice and use a pair of vice grips to take the bend out of it so it's flat. Most lock washers our about .125,000 or 1/8 of an inch. This will put your clutch back to having good spring pressure. If you use then washers like from MTC make sure that the washer goes over the stud when youTitan it down. Also measure the outside of the bolt with the outside of the pressure plate to make sure one of the washers didn't get caught in between the stud and washer all five of the bolts should look like they are the same depth in the pressure plate. The other thing to watch for on the steels is They get little humps on them, these humps will rip the fiber off the clutch plate. I have tried sanding them off on a flat sander but it's really better to just replace the steels. If you wish not to shim the clutch, Kawi offers three different thickness steels a 2.3 mm - 2.6mm - 2.9mm. the factory clutch comes with 2.6mm. you can buy two or three of the 2.9 mm steels and this may bring your clutch back out to factory stack height.
