Found a 1977 Kawasaki original KZ1000
A guy at works father owned it. it is all original except for the aftermarket backrest and rack (which bolts on). And someone put a set of LTD mags on it during it's life (16" inch rear, but he still has the factory spoked wheels. It has 29K on it and the factory exhaust and airbox. It's not super clean but has been kept inside. It has all of the factory bars, mirriors and blinkers still on it. Is the redish orange with gold stripes. It will need the carbs cleaned and a battery. He want's $1500 for it? deal or no deal? It's just a standard model.

If it is indeed in great shape and has to have nothing replaced, it is very well a good buy at 1500. Complete bikes in running shape that are rough looking are bringing that price at times. I have right at 10k in my 77LTD. I cant post a pic here but post one of that one when you can.

Well worth the 1500,even though the Z-1's are the more collectible bikes, any old Kawasaki like that is worth the money. Very cool bikes for sure and they handle better with the mags, have all the original parts and thats the way to ensure they are most valuable. IMO the old Kaws are great looking and the best sounding bikes ever produced.I have a modified 76 KZ900 with a Yoshimura piston kit,Yosh cams,Yosh ported cylinder head and Yosh close ratio transmission,I am patiently waiting for a Bimota or Rickman frame roller to come along. Post pics of that Z.

Hey Big,
I still have a '78 KZ1000 that I bought new, June will be 33 years and I would not take anywhere near 1500 bucks for mine!
If you don't want it please let me know........you're not that far from me. I just recently made a 2,000 mile road trip to pick up a '68 Honda and you're closer to me than that.
You can't go wrong by buying it. I go to the Mid-Ohio Vintage Days every year and old Kaws are bringing stupid money.
Why say no when it's so easy to say yes!! Buy it.

A buddy here locally has a 1105 KZ with all the goodies in a Rickman frame and it is SHARP!!! He's had it 30 years that I know of and wouldn't sell it if his life depended on it.
They are as rare as hens teeth but man o man they are a work of art.
I don't know of any others out there but I'll surely let you know if I find one.

Well I did some searching on the internet and it looks like it could be worth the money. Seems like on Ebay the Japan market is buying them up. I can buy it, ride it then make a few bucks off of it. For not much more you can buy a ZRX kaw or a Bandit 12 Suzuki and have a much better standard bike to rde.

Dan,thanks for the info. One of the older guys in the neighborhood had a 1002cc Kaw motored Rickman w/all the Yoshimura goodies and boy was that a fast bike it was as fast as some of the turbos on top end. Believe it or not a neighbor has a Rickman Endurance with a KZ motor sitting outside his house in Brooklyn here for I would say a minimum of 25 years. It is deteriorated beyond belief. NOT FOR SALE

The problem with old bikes is that the seals go hard.
They are made of rubber (believe it or not!)
All ok for a start and a few revs etc, but take it out for a good run - and physics - (hot engine, oil pressure up, over rev here and there, and the hard seal goes 'fuck it, i'm outta here',,,) - takes over...
Blue smoke out the exhausts, the oil light coming on, that little tick becoming a knock, and you're 100miles from home....!
Seals go hard. If not stretched over time they harden to the state that they have been left for 10 years.
The worst bike to buy (unless you know and can afford to 'do it up properly'), is to buy a bike that has been sat there for yonks.
Fork seals, are a prime candidate for this. bit of a leak here and there, see oil, wipe oil, replace in 1-2 hours...
But engine/crank/gearbox seals, you never know......

The reddish orange paint scheme is from the 1978 model. 1977 was either a very dark blue/green or a deep wine red.
Best ways to differentiate 77 from 78 is...77 had the front caliper mounted in front of the fork tube, in 78 Kawi moved it to behind the fork. The 77 had a standard on/off/reserve petcock and the 78 had a vacuum operated valve.
Of course it's possible to switch parts, but if you find all of these aspects then you'll know what year it is.

Buy it.
My bone stock 78 KZ650 draws a bigger crowd at any bike gathering than even my 14.
I fully understand that the memories of these older bikes are way better than the bikes were any good, but regardless they're still a blast to have around.
It's not like it's from the 60's when they were, as often as not' going to make you walk. Put a dyna ignition in it so you don't have the points to mess with and it'll be a reliable as a cold chisel. If at all possible, keep the paint and such origional. A little patina on a 33-34 year old bike is expected and acceptable in my opinion.

OK, it could be a 78, the front claipers are on the back side of the forks. I talked him down to $1200. Found an even cooler 1978 CB750 Super Sport for $1500 with low mileage. It's the old black motored single cam. with the Comstar wheels. I love the old single cam 750 Hondas.
