Crank markings

Does anyone have a pic of a zx14 crank with the "0" marking for rod bearings? I have the manual and would like to know if it would be stamped or whatever it is in the rods(looks like it was written with a sharpie)

I have never built a 14. Yamaha used color codes for the rod bearing on my old FJ1200
in the Yamaha Service manual(chart) you looked up the color dot and wrote down what size bearings to order if you did not have a good O.D. micrometer. I think..................... it's been 20 years :-)

In this picture, the number 3 rod journal has a mark and the number 3 main has a mark. All others have no mark.

I my garage, I have a crank that the number 5 pork chop from the left has two marks indicating that the number 3 rod journal and number 4 main have marks.

As you can see, the marks that you are looking for are nothing more than a dab of paint.

Personally, I just run the thin bearings in everything. I've been doing it in every jap motor I've built since 1986 with no issues. Started out as a racing trick but I carried it over to the street, again, with no issues.

I'm sure that there are some folks here who will point out the errors of my ways... LOL

He is right. I have been looking in the Service manual. If no "o" it is 1.4954-1.4957

If you see the "O" mark the bearing is 1.4958-1.4961 on the mains

There are 3 Color coded bearings that have 3 different values of thickness.

Brown
Black
Blue

The color dot on the pic of th crank does have anything to do with selecting the correct bearing for each crank pin.

Looks like the smallest bearing is about 2 tenth's of a inch smaller then the largest bearing X2..... not sure about going with all thin bearings for a street engine. May not knock but I would want a "Perfect" fit for a 50,000 mile street engine.

Look at page 9-6 Service manual

the problem i'm having is the marks on the crank don't mach the diagram from the manual. according to the manual the 5th ear should only have a main bearing mark, but it has two.

Wrong, on the 5th ear the top dot is for the 4th main and the bottom dot is for the #3 rod.

I look down left to right.
I see 4 is my throw 5 don't chew know.
I X my Y to Z the size are and combos I choose. A to1 say or C to D [x/y the chart reads] no matter my X to Y is concept to see what color Z might be?

I look at said chart on the wall. How close did I get to understanding you sitting look down at your poise pad, see if it needs changing... I mean the insert.

just in case this can help someone else out. the markings on the crank would call for blue bearings on #1 & #4 rods and black on #2 & #3 rods

update: blue bearings were fine for #1 & #4 black worked for #3, but #2 was tight so I have a brown bearing on the way.
