Slick 50
I am hearing a rattling sound when starting my bike. I was told by a could of guys that it sounds like my oil pump is going bad and that the oil is not pumping up as fast as it should. One guy suggested I add some slick 50 to my oil when I change my oil. Any thoughts or experience on this?

Welcome to the forum. Thats your cam chain tensioner. They all do it and it is considered normal. My 07 does it evertime I start it. It should do it for a little while at start up and then go away.

Welcome To The Forum!
If the noise bothers you enough you can get the manual cam chain tensioners to alleviate the sound. I agree with everyone else here, don’t listen to the guy about using slick 50.

slick 50 is teflon based, and will make your clutches slip most likely.
Do not put that in a motorcycle engine!
as mentioned its your cam chain tensioner, once it see`s enough oil pressure it will lift off the mechanical lock and quiet down with hydraulic pressure on the chain.
Personally, I do not rev the motor until the noise goes away, I let it idle until quiet.

So is the rattle just basically the chain "roping" on the drive sprockets then? Or would it be hitting the case anywhere when it's that loose? Mine does it too now, but it didn't start doing it until I hit about 8500 miles..........but I've been at ease about it since I'd read what you guys have all discussed over the years.

likely the chain is slapping the tensioner and guides, until oil pressure comes up
