Strange clunk when slowing to a stop, near rear.
'06 14, 13,000 miles.
When I'm slowing to a stop I feel a strange 'clunk' through the pegs.
If I stop hard I don't notice it. It is fairly subtle, but it is something new.
I had my tires replaced about 500 miles ago and I think it may have started around that time.
If a spacer was left out of the rear wheel would I notice when adjusting the chain?
I've put the bike up an a stand and tried moving the rear wheel both side to side plus fore and aft. If feel no play, although the stand starts flexing when I pull the wheel hard from side to side.
The chain looks good and the wheel is straight.
Should I disassemble the wheel and see if something was left out?

Make sure the chain has 1.3 to 1.5 inches of freeplay as the manual recomends too.

Caliper bolts were tight. Chain is not stretched. Chain was properly adjusted. Performed a visual inspection and saw nothing wrong (she needs a cleaning). Kickstand spring seems very wimpy, maybe it is the stand bumping? I'll place a thin rubber bumber on the kickstand and see if that is it. Noticed a 1/2" crack in my brand new rear tire, right in the meat of the tread >: (

Mine did that too for a while. I don't know what I did to make it go away though... It's almost like it went away by itself but I know that can't be the case. I've had my bike apart many times and I think I put it back together correctly and that's how my noise went away lol!

So, was it the sidestand? Didn't know if you'd figured it out yet -- I'm not sure what it could be other than something rear wheel / rear brake related

swiftnet 2 things come to mind. 1st check torque of rear axle nut and make sure both sides are aligned properly. If it didn't do it before the tire service it's most likely related to the wheel install.

If your new tire has a crack it sounds like a old tire. I would be in contact with who sold you the tire about a free replacement.

+1 look on the sidewall. There is a code with the date the tire was made. Google how to read these #s......week and year the tire was made. Remove the rear wheel and look at how all the spacers and everting is assembled and then look at the Kaw Service manual and re-install and adjust and see if nosie goes away. Look at rear brake caliper, the piston may be sticking and on a easy stop it does not not back off rotor. Caliper bolts in wrong hole.different lengths ( I think) Also look at rear shock and the "Dog Bones" see if any parts are loose. Check rear swing arm for side end play. I am just guessing on this.

i would re-inspect the frame recall inspection as a starting point if there was nothing wrong with wheel /tire installation

I called Michelin and told them about the tire cracks. They asked that I bring it to a motorcycle dealer so the dealer can determine if the defect is from road hazards or a mfg defect. I rode (white knuckled) the bike down to the shop to have a new tire (Pilot Power 2CT) installed and the old one inspected. I also mentioned the clunk. The tech took it out and did not notice the clunk. It is pretty damn subtle.... He said he would check the bearings, spacers, and whatever else he could when the wheel came off.
After inspecting the tire, the tech found multiple smaller cracks all over it. Definitely a manufacturing defect. He said everything looked good regarding the bearings, chain, sprockets and spacers.
I called Michelin back and they asked to speak to the service manager. Michelin paid for my new tire! All I had to pay was the mounting fee + tax, a total of $36.00.
The clunk seems even more subtle now. Maybe all those years of 'better living through chemistry' have caught up with me.
I'm going out for a ride with friends tonight, I'll have them all take her for a spin while looking for the 'clunk'. If none of them notice it, I'll buy some gellin insoles to dampen what I think feels like a clunk and be done with it.
Thanks for all the input and suggestions. I'll look for the dreaded frame crack before I ride.

You should have the dealer check the frame recall while it was in the shop. Or was it a Kawasaki Dealer?

Wow. Like I said I had this same problem a while ago and before I could find out the clunk disappeared all by itself. I don't know if the problem is really gone or if it will come back . Strange!

Oy...not da chain!
Took the bike out for several hours tonight. Three different guys tried my bike out and no one felt the clunk.
New rear tire performed very well and is officially scrubbed in (1/4" chicken strips will be gone in the next couple of weeks).
Bike stable at indicated 160mph and more importantly stable in the twisty's.
My problem is solved...for now.

I can feel the same thing in the pegs too sometimes. I though it might have been the chain, but not sure. I have Vortec rearsets. Don't know if that makes me feel the clunk more or what.

I get that clunk once in awhile when I apply the rear brakes. sometimes I think it sounds like free play in the steering bearings moving backward and forward. I tightened down the top nut but need a special tool to make sure everything else is tight and I dont have that. Or maybe the frame cracked and moving a little under rigid breaking. Mine still does it. At 10.5K
