when to change the chain?
When would be the best time to change out the stock chain? I'm over 12,000 miles now.

I tend to change mine out every 10,000miles or less........depending on stretch, sprocket wear, and how much I've had to adjust out of it...........it's usually a $300 bill for ZZZ chain and both sprockets -- which I believe should ALWAYS be changed together as a set.........of course this is personal preference, some guys may run them longer or change 'em out sooner..........but mine is basically street use only, no drag or LSR.........yet

You can see sprocket deterioration when the teeth lose their profile and begin hooking but chain stretch is mostly wear of the pins, you can't see how bad it is - and then it fails.
12,000 miles is good going for such a powerful bike. Time for a new chain and both sprockets in my book.

if you are not having to constantly adjust it, your sprockets are still decent, no links are tight/kinked, or you don't have the red dust of chain death....
keep lubing and riding it.
As a chain gets closer to replacement, you'll be constantly adjusting it due to accelerated wear, and the red dust of death will appear shortly.

I changed my 1st chain at 32k.
Now my bike has a little over 65k.
Only adjusted it once but I lube and clean it all the time.
She's still good
A couple things would make me change a chain out.
1st if there's no more adjustment left 2nd if the chain has tight and loose spots.
3rd if there is any missing o-rings ,rust or links that are wearing out faster than the rest of the chain.

I did 26k before the red death attacked. Just keep it lubed & dry it off after a wash(ie go for a ride) keeps it alive for quite awhile. On the positive side it's a good time to regear.

I changed mine when I run a rag over it to clean it and could feel slight kinking . I think life will very from how well maintined and if the bike is raced or riden hard.
