my question in the CBR1000RR Zone forum

I put a question up in this forum for my friends CBR600F4i. Nobody is replying. Here is the topic, maybe yall could give your opinion.

FIRST POST: My friend bought a stuntbike for $2000. It's an 02 Honda 600 F4i. The wiring has been messed with some, but the problem he's having might be something simple to you guys. Maybe yall can help...

When he got the bike, as soon as you turned the key on, the bike would start without pushing the starter button. He didn't think too much about it and rode it home, but I was worried the starter was still spinning with the engine. He made it home ok. I told him I thought the starter button was hung, but he said he took it apart and it wasn't hanging. Well, this past weekend he was going to ride it to my house so I could work on it, but he only made it about a couple miles and the engine died and won't start back. Nothing works, no headlights or anything. We loaded it in back of a friends truck and brought it here.

So far, I've noticed the battery voltage at the posts read 0 volts when the terminals are connected and it read 8 volts when disconnected. I'm thinking it's got a grounded out hot wire or something, but not sure. I've got the battery out and charged it back up, but I'm not putting it back in until I find the problem. I've got the tank off and working on getting the crash cage off, then the plastic. I'm gonna try to trace and inspect every wire and component that has to do with starting the bike. Any thoughts on what either problem could be would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading this long (and probably confusing) post!

SECOND POST: Ok, just found out that the starter button did work a couple times before it was starting with just the key being on.

THIRD POST: Update, ruled out a hotwire being grounded out. I think the starter relay is messed up. With the key off and touching the battery terminals to the charged battery, it will turn over. With the key on, and touching the terminals to the battery, it will turn over and fire up. All this without using the starter button. Anyone had this problem before?

FYI- just syain'.... the most resourceful forum for that bike is 600RR.net

and besides quick advice, you'll probably get a pdf shop manual free over there.

Well if the battery reads 8 volts unhooked, there is the problem.

There is a time and place for this busa joke.........this IS not it. Bad Form

Check the ground from the starter relay and the ingnition switch ground. A bad relay that is stuck open can discharge the battery when key is off.

I'm gonna try a new starter relay. With the relay off the bike, the terminals for the battery and starter had continuity. My friend said it should have that.
