new engine project ...ZX-13

I am thinking about starting on a new engine ... one to compete with stock Busas. I am going to destroke a ZX-14 , with a +2mm bore. 86 x 58 will get me 1348 cc, just under the 1350 cc class limit .

From all the testing I have done on car engines , I believe I can make the same power with the shorter stroke , I just need to turn more RPM. Power is limited by the amount of air the motor can pull and the heads are usually the limiting factor. The same heads on 357, 400 and 427 smal block chevy motors all made the same peak power, just had different torque curves .

The megasquirt project will be good for this ... raising the revlimiter and changing ignition maps for the small /faster reving motor. I think I have most of the parts laying around the shop except for bigger cams .

and if this doesn't work out , I can always put the bigger cams in the 1530 :-)

I discussed the details of this with Jim awhile back, also 86 x 58.

It is actually cheaper for Marine to de-stroke the crank, than to add stroke. Win-win.

The biggest drawback is that the engine will have to compete with ZX-12R's on motor or spray. The 12R head is a bit better, among a few other things. I'm not sure if you were planning on running naked or faired, but either way you will have to pee in some pretty tall grass!

why is competing with zx-12's a problem ? I thought most of the records in the 1350 cc clas were on busas.

The 1350 modified fuel class records, naked and faired, are both held by ZX-12R's.

9314 M/F-1350/4 RnR Cycles Ali Abubakr Jun-09 203.438
519 MPS/F-1350/4 Bad For Good Racing Jim Owen Apr-04 218.648

The Altered 1350 Gas record was also recently set on a 12R:

436 A/G-1350/4 Seldom Seen Slim Land Speed Racing Jon Wennerberg Apr-10 185.825

The above records are at Maxton, of course.

Some 1287cc 12R's have also run 205-210+ mph in the mile right now, faired, on motor. So, while you may be able to exceed these #'s...you may also want to be aware of them.

Shane

You'll be playing with 210-215mph NA records in the MPS and APS class....

But it's a whole lot better than those 220+mph records in the 1650 class!

You 14 guys have it tough playing with all thos monster stroker Busa's.
