Advice on cam chain tensioner

I was at the track last night and let my bike sit for about an hour. When I fired it up it took about 30 seconds for the "rattle" to go away. There was a guy there that owns a motorcycle performance shop that was trying to scare me into buying an APE manual tensioner and have him install it.

I have done some research on this and there are mixed reviews. Is my bike a ticking time bomb? Is this long of a rattle normal? (I thought that everybody had the rattle) Sometimes is rattles for two seconds, sometimes for 15-30 seconds.

Could I just replace the stock cam chain with a new one if it is getting worn?

Here is a quote from SMOKIN I found when I was searching...Does this still hold true?

Ok lets put this to rest ....The zx14 uses a rachet type adjustor ... Oil pressure is used to push out the plunger into the cam chain guide ... The rachet holds the adjustor from backing off ...So at high RPMs backing off the throttle the adjustor does NOT back off ...

The reason you have start up rattle is the adjustor has not caught the first grove in the rachet ... With a few miles the chain will get a bit longer allowing the adjustor to to grab the first grove in the rachet ...I ride mine hard and the start up rattle stopped around 2500 miles ..If you ride easy it may take a few more miles but the start up rattle will stop at some point .. The point is there is NOT a problem and i have yet to hear of someone having a problem with the cam chains on the zx14 ..

My 09 zx14 does NOT have the start up rattle and that leads me to believe they did a little fine tunning on the 09 adjustor so it would rachet to the first grove without waiting for the cam chain to get longer .. It makes no sence to mod a zx12 adjustor to fit a zx14 ..Unless you have a full out drag bike with a built motor i see no need for a manual tensioner either..

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Your bike is behaving normally and there's nothing wrong with it. I've put 20,000 miles on my bike and it rattled on start up every time. You can get the APE and have it installed or try this. rattle gone. Or do nothing.

try a modified zx 12 tensioner. i replaced mine 2 years ago and haven't heard anymore noise. now you engine guru's can chime in anytime but i think the low oil pressure these bike run make the 14's cct prone to this.

I appreciate the feedback. The noise really does not bother me, so I would like to do nothing. I just want to make sure that something catastrophic is not about to occur....Especially if I can prevent it.

They don't stop worth a damn either. I told you to fuk more and eat less and you would not need a turbo.

Oh ................ fuk a Booza. I think they are ugly. You will miss shifts with it too. :-)

A modded ZX-12 CCT is a good fix if you don't want to manual adjust.

Or the oil drains out of the bore in the CCT. Just a thought. Who machined your ZX-12 CCT?

99 to 2001 busa had a big CCT problem ... When the busa CCT let go it took out the head and valves and pistons ..Just cause you got a busa doesn't turn the bike into a saint .. Saint Busa has pleanty of problems as you will find out very soon ...

My 07 rattled like hell all the time, even when riding at low rpm's. I installed the APE tensioner, and I'm glad I did. No more rattle and runs better too. I recommend gettting one.

I need to do something about mine also, I've noticed that my rattle seems to be getting worse at startup. I started it up last night at bike night and people looked over at with an expression on their face like "What the hell is wrong with your bike" It does go away after about 15-30seconds but its annoying as hell.

Have you tried to turn off engine after 15 seconds and re start ??? 30 seconds on a tight engine with

good oil pressure is Not Normal CCT noise.

If my engine Ever does it that long I will either have a ZX-12 CCT machined or do the manual adjuster.

Sorry for thread jack a few posts back.

Well let me take that back I wouldnt say its 30 seconds i would say about 10-15seconds. It goes away if I blip the throttle but I still dont like rattling like that. Im gonna just have another CCT put in and see what happens

Put a zx12r tensioner it it and be done with the worries.
Put it in a lathe and cut .120" off the flange surface.

A warning to anyone running cams and springs..... get that garbage stock tensioner out of there.

Yes we do. But all you need is to find someone with a lathe. Its very simple and takes about 5 minutes.
