I killed the 00 R1 today :(
My old trusty 00 R1 died today with 36K on it. Riding some back roads come out of a tight corner drop it down to 2nd wind it out, hit 3rd and about 11K rpm's I heard it start making noise. Right before I got out of the gas #1 and #2 rods let go. #1 punched a hole in the front and back of the block. #2 just knocked a big piece out of the front. it threw a little oil out but not much. pulled the clutch in and coasted to a stop. Being a 2000 model I don't even know if I am going to fix it. Old carb. bikes don't bring much. It's the nice blue one with crome rims and a polished frame. I will post some pics of the motor when I get it out. Maybe I could get one of these 06 GSXR1000 motors to fit in it.....

Bummers, I hate blowing up motors. Probably cheaper to replace with a used motor, be aware 2nd gear failures are common on these so check out any you find carefully as you must split the cases to repair the trans.

Yea it had a bad 2nd in it when I got it. that's how I got it cheap. got me a trans from Ebay and put it in. I went ahead and dropped the motor out. Took some crappy pics with my cell phone. There will be no fixing this one. At least I can salvage the clutch, trans and head. hopefully it didn't get the valves.
front of motor

Rear of #1 you can see all the way through. Most likely too many wheely's

hell, if the chassis is in good shape and you like the bike...drop a new/used motor in it and keep on enjoying it. That is a great looking liter bike even by todays standards.
Cool looking carnage pics too...

Hey Big,
I feel your pain.......
I agree with the guys, find a used motor and keep riding the bike. They are nice bikes.

It is a good looking bike. Today I am going to fit the extra 06 GSXR1000 Suzuki motor in the frame and see how close it comes to lining up. I have a complete wiring harness with throttlebodies and handle bar controls for the 06 1000. I could use one of my external Fuel pumps and regulator left over from one of my old Turbo Kits for the Busa to get fuel to it. should have no problem fitting the Suzuki air box. I could call it a Yamuki 1000. Other than mounting the motor I already have all the stuff. But tomorrow I will still go down to the local salvage yard and see if they have a motor cheap. I had tried to sell the bike several times and could not even get $2500 for it. NO one wanted an old carb. bike.

talk about a fucking sleeper... no one expects to be beaten by an R1 at the drag strip! Think about how much ass yami would kick if they started putting gsxr1k motors in their bikes lol :P

I am not sure that the 00 R1 is as light as the 06 GSXR is. But I know the R1only made around a 130 RWHP (never dynoed just read that they did). The 06 motor I have has the 01-04 lower geared trans in it and a thin head gasket. Which makes a little over 180 H.P. at the wheel, throw a 40 dry shot on top of that and it would be an upgrade. I hate to waste a good GSXR motor by putting it in the R1. It surely would be a hard to get rid of then.

OK first here is a side view of the R1 motor

Next a side view of the 06 GSXR1000 motor

Looks like it should be very easy to mount up the GSXR motor in the yamaha frame. The yamaha does not use an external oilcooler, water hoses are pretty much the same. The GSXR gauges will mount where the R1 gauges go. If the junk yard does not have a bolt in motor I thinkI will go ahead with the sex change for the R1. I checked and the R1 is a light weight. So it should run good.

Well I drove to the local salvage yard and they had a totaled 2002 R1 that was broke in half. I drained the oil and it didn't have any metal in it. No way to hear it run but they had to be riding it when they crashed. had a lot of dirt on it so it looks like it was run off road and then endo sevral times. Since he could not hear it run I got it with no warranty/take a chance for $250 dollars complete with all electronics. It was a F.I. motor so I am going to use the head off of the 00 motor. Pic's tomorrow

Would it be too difficult to convert it to FI? I mean if he gave you everything i suppose its a bolt on affair?

The throttle bodies, airbox, most of the wiring were gone. When I said electronics I meant the ones that were on the motor. The R1 front end was gone from right behind the neck. Just looking at the motors the spacing for the throttlebodies is a lot closer than the 00 carb spacing. other than that the motors are the same. All I need to do is swap the 00 head onto it. put the crank trigger and stator from the 00 and start riding again. But you are right it would have been sweet to covert it to F.I. If those GSXR1000 motors were not so valuable I would have liked to have put it in the R1. But I can sell one of those GSXR1000 motors for darn near what I could get from the R1 running.

started fixing
OK the two motor have the same bottom end. Here they both are with the heads taken off. I had to change out the ignition rotor and pickup, the Stator was the same.

The 00 motor #1 piston hit the two wxhaust valves pretty hard. you can see in the first pick the marks the valves left on the piston.

It hit hard enought to bend both valves and knock the tops out of the buckets and break the shims in half. that's the bucket with the top missing by the two bent valves.

The F.I. head was different but lucky for me they use the same valvetrain. So I robbed two valves out of the F.I. head and all the other parts I needed.

A few minutes lapping the valves in and assy. the head and you have the Genisis 5 Valve! WOW! what a pain, twenty valves to adjust..

All I have to do now is put the head back on and stick it in the bike. should be riding by lunch tomorrw. I know it's not a ZX-14 But I thought yall might enjoy some carnage repair.

Yea even the older FZR 750 and FZR1000's had the 5 valve heads. Maybe started around 87 or 88. 3 intake and 2 exhaust.
