I just changed the oil for the spring trip to mountains. Finally used someof the Amsoil
10-40 I got from James............ shifts a little smoother but the CCT noise on cold start is still here.
Bently........... you were lucky on your 14 when you posted Amsoil stopped the noise.

What kinda of noise does the CCT make? I have now 4800 miles and i don't hear anything out of the ordinary. Kind of sad i have a 4 year old bike with only 4800 (bought it with 3401miles) while i have a year and a half old gixxer with close to 15K i bought new with 2 miles on it lol.

The newer oils with the later designations are not better. They are worse for protecting flat tappet cams. The feds have regulated out almost all of the additives that protect flat tappets. I would never use any oil after SJ in a flat tappet engine without an additive.
The Joe Gibbs XP3 oil will make more power on the dyno and has plenty of zinc, phosphorous, calcium, to lube the flat tappets and keep the oil neutralized even with these nasty race fuels.

Ive heard the same thing from a pro chevy race engine builder, which was why i was looking at certain racing oils because they are fortified with alot of zinc.

Yes the E.P.A is responsible for the removal of the precious zinc in our oils.Diesel oils were a good choice cause of their zinc content but not no more. Even valvoline racing oil has little or no zinc anymore.
You need to go with an additive or racing only oil to get what you need .

I am glad I change oil every 2500 miles or so. Hey James finally changed to the
Amsoil 10-40 I got from you. Shifts a little smoother. Used a OEM filer. Also finally
installed Shanes flat oil drain bolt with a Kawasaki washer. Works great no leaks.
Will grind the fins/guard off today.

nothing really to add. Bottom line though on any motor, keep good, fresh oil in it and keep it topped off. The harder you run it, change it more often.

I think 3000 on a high quality synthetic is still reasonable even with hard riding wouldn't you say?

Hey Louis, That's good to hear. I hate to know you still have CCT knock. Has anyone you know of had any failures completely? I heard mine once with 5w20. I'm glad going back to 10w40 put it back to normal. Also, I only have 1100 miles on the bike. Not sure when the knock is giong to start.

Have not read about any CCT failures. I read that the 2009 14 has a different part# for the CCT??? My 2007 14 has always had the CCT tick for a second on cold start. Does not matter what brand oil I have used. Mike has almost 30,000 miles on his 2006 and still runs Great CCT tick does not bother him :-) getting use to it too. if it does not break anything no big deal. Still in warranty :-) but have read some not to good stories about engine and trans problems repaired at Dealers. If the 2009 CCT is a better design I would be interested in installing one.......... unless it is too much $$$ :-)

If its just a cold start up noise nuisance i don't care about fixing it. If its something that will give me trouble down the line then i will look into it.

This thread just spun me off into a 3 hour oil search.... I came to the same conclusion again. I have yet to see conclusive evidence that states that car oil can't be used in motorcycles...... There is too much info to digest.
