new bike has problems
Hey guys,
i just bought a used 2008 zx-14. I drove it home and then went away to work for a month. Now that I am home I took my bike out for a ride and realized that the speedometer is way out. Also the low fuel indicator came on and would not go away after filling. so I unhooked the battery to see if I could reset it. That worked for about five min until my bike shut of and now will not start. It will turn over but to me sounds like its not getting fuel. Gauge still reads zero, but i no longer have the flashing low fuel indication.
HELP!!!

First thing ~ < Check the little square fuse box, located under the seat at the rear. Lift the cover, note the ~ band is still intact across the other tang or is ~ ~ < Burnt in half and broken.

your battery is more than likely shot...these newer bikes do some crazy things whenever the proper voltage isnt applied my bike WILL NOT start if the battery voltage is below 12 volts. with the low level voltage communications in this bikes sytem it may just be going retarded from it not seeing the right voltage. just a guess...i mean it sat for a month...
try to put it on a battery charger and fire it up. im sure that will work.

okay i'll try that.
I did manage to ride it for and hour or so before the fuel issue started so I would think the battery is as charged as its gonna get. the instrument panel says the battery is putting out 12volts, is this low?

It sat a month, you figure a battery will lose 1% charge per day. That is about 30% down. A strong battery read at the dash will read 12.8v ~ 12.6v you turn the key on.
Your battery reading 12v is on the ragged edge like, 66oh6 mentioned. If you have the charger on the bike, you might want to attempt a, 'mini-current-draw' by removing the charger, let the bike sit for a few hours. Walk back to it, turn the key on, see what it reads?
Then, you hold the brake on with the hand or foot, whichever is easier, and just sit there for about 3 minutes with it held on. A stuck tail light you riding around will kill the battery. So, this mini draw on the battery is better you walk away for about 5 minutes with a zip-tie to the front brake lever.
Then you come back, see the dash read 12v or 11.9v say is say la V is a new battery, cause 'n effect, the bike's battery is/was a sitter before you bought it. Might just be a battery is key put you put the key fob set to run. Once the battery is squared away, you now diagnose the speedo at the dash, then down the wire. Again, 66 mentions the CAN Communication and that is part of the speedo loop in the dash. Lots of communication, therefore, lots of demand from the battery.

When you do get it running the voltage should be about 13.8 to 14.5 or so while driving, that will indicate that the charging system is working OK. At 12V reading, the battery is almost dead.
If the battery was in good shape, it should hold a charge well enough to not give you problems in the month no running in warm climates, but it sounds like the battery is on the weak side, and can not hold a charge for very long.
Good luck and let us know.

I'm thinking that there may be a problem with your alternator, regulator or in the wiring/connectors in the charging circuit. Either that, or your battery is shot, as others have suggested, and just won't hold enough charge to keep the electronics working. The fact that it will crank the bike over makes me doubt that, though. If the voltage showing on the panel is 12 volts even when you're riding it, then this would indicate that your charging system isn't working and the bike's just running on the residual voltage in the battery.
Electrical problems can be, and usually are, a bitch! Good luck.

How off is your speedo? If you just rode the bike home and parked it maybe the speedo is off a bit because of a front sprocket change? If the sending unit on the pump is bad it will not send the correct fuel level to the cluster. Maybe the sending unit got sludges up or something from sitting. I would pull the tank and check the fuel pump itself and make sure the float is not binding.

okay here is the scoop,
I charged the battery all night and this am the bike still will not start. i dont have a voltmeter but the one on the bike's display reads 11.8v. this is making me think that it is a bad battery. im running out to get a new one now and we will see.
My speedo was reading 100kmph while only doing 80kmph. (i check by following my roomies car) and while going with the flow of traffic prob around 90kmph it was indicating around 120-130kmph.
i bought the bike at a used bike shop but they also sell on consignment. so they say that it is not their responsibility. i would love to take it back and have them fix it, but i dont think they will do anything for me. (not to mention i now have no way of transporting it) but they did tell they had done an inspection which they obviously haven't so im inclined to keep pushing them.

Hope you purchase a sealed AGM replacement. I hate the cheaper old school acid filled.
Trickle charge the new battery for a few hours before you install. Dubious has some
really trick batteies for sale in Backyard garage section here.

Here is the scoop? "Holdon Cowboy," WATT DIE say. Die wanted 2 scoops wit dose is rainbow spring kills.
You want to see their 'check off list,' but do not say that over the phone or they will just write one up, show the volts were up to snuff. Then you ask to see their battery load tester to verify. You snow [cone] them, rather they twist your titties like, well, like, Madonna. http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2008/02/15/madonna_narrowweb__300x514,0.jpg

Really? 1% a day? I left my gixxer unattended for like over 2 months at one point and it started right up without any sign of a struggling battery, you figure thats 60% gone right there. The ZX14 must have some battery leach.

Mine sat for almost 6 months when she was crashed with no attention at all. Started right back up like old time when I put her back together.

The dealer sold you a lemon. I would take it back to them and use the lemon law to help.
But so far the battery is suspect so we'll see what happens when you change it out.

Considering he is describing speed in km/h which means he's not in the USA, i dont think the lemon law we have here in the states applies to where he's from. The thread title said new bike, so i assumed new as in new never been used but yet he bought it from a used bike dealer?
