WEIGHT AND GEARING ZX14
I have a question for all of you guru guys that have been on here for a while.
I have an 08 zx 14 modded out in a few ways.............
What is the best greaing for a guy that weighs about 275-280.
Right now I have a 16t on the front and a 40 tooth on the rear that would give me about
2 up in the back when it is all said and done. I have just removed the 186 mph limit on the bike and the bike makes 187hp...........208ft./lbs of tourqe. I love to do roll-ons with my friends..................I thought that going up on the rear would help the roll-ons...............and removing the speed limiter will let the bike run harder on top getting closer to redline in top
gear.............thus running faster on the top end as well..............
ok now................without being rude or crude.............am I going in the right direction with
this combo or what?

Well, a 40 is actually down one. I would probably say a 44 in the rear would be good for your weight if not a larger one. I run a 16/41 at 130lbs and it is perfect. You are actually going the wrong way on your gearing.

Roll on's and still have some top end.I run 17/43. I weigh 225 in shorts 240 suited and more
if I have soft bags for out of state riding. I hate running a small front sprocket, wears out
chain a little faster. 208 lbs of torque, type-o. we all wish. :-)

16/49 would prob be the most you could go. We run 16/48 and I can't tell you exactly where we are in 6th but it's closer to the end than the beginning.

Just remember that I already have the 16 tooth on the front as well.
So with the 40 rear that would put me at 2 up on the rear total.
Like a 17-43.
Yeah the 208 torque was for sure a typ-o!....LMFAO
You guys do not miss anything.

I dont think your understanding the way the sprockets work...
Going down in the front is the same as going up in the rear. Going to 16/40 isn't changing your gearing that much because they are both going in opposite direction. You need to do something like 16/43 or 16/45.

Yes, I do realize that...........I still want some top end..........you know the best of both worlds
All of my friends have restricted bikes.....now that mine does not I hope with this gearing to be able to push by them on top when they hit the limiter.
In a street roll on with just a 16 tooth.....................my friend beats me by 2-3 bikes.
It slowed me down all the way through the gears. With the 40 tooth in the rear, and the 17 tooth up front, I can pull him 2-3 bikes....................16/43-16-45 is REALLY low gearing
for what I want. I do not go to the strip.
Dave.

Here's my theory... you can still run 150mph with 16/48 and you'll get there a SHIT TON faster. at your "size" I would rather have the extra umph of 16/46 or 16/48 so that you can hang with the smaller guys in roll ons. (just catch them from a slow roll where you'll really be able to make the most of it.) I can tell you right now that with 16/46 gearing i'll run off and hide from a bike with 16/40 gearing before they get to 100 mph. I'm not setting any land speed records, it gets 25mpg, and runs 5500rpms @ 75mph, but it accelerates like a motherfucker.

thats about what 17/49 does also .. its also keeps me from speeding tickets buy hanging around the 5 to 6k rpm spot .. i shaved off 1 of the corners on the speedo nut so my odometer reads true with 17/49 also

a 16t in the front did not slow the bike down through all the gears. If anything it let you launch harder and pulled bearded through all gears.

From a second gear roll on...............yes the 16 t slowed the bike down from 80 to 175-180.

Here's what I would do...........buy a 44 tooth rear sprocket then you can switch off between 17/44 and 16/44 real easily and cheaply...........if max acceleration is what you are after I would go with 16/44..........if you do more highway crusing run the 17/44 the majority of the time.................CC is right though, lower gearing will pretty much always give you faster acceleration, if you are slower with the lower gearing you NEED to practice your launching technique and shifting and get used to it.........but for a big guy like you I would run 16/44..........you need the extra torque to pull you out of the hole as the 1000's may be 200-250 pounds lighter than you when counting bike and rider weight.

That hits the limiter at 238 mph.
Gonna need a little more than the stock motor ......................

Just reread your post if most of your racing is from roll ons that start at 80 plus and go to 180 rather than launching from a dead stop I would go with 17/44 that should give you about the same top speed as a stocker with better roll on acceleration as well..............your not going to really get more speed than the 186........particularly at your size and weight unless you add some horsepower to that motor.........might want to consider nitrous or Y2K's head and cam package...........THEN you'll gain both acceleration AND MPH.........remember gearing is usually a trade off.
