Been down in textile riding gear?

I've just been notified that the new leather I'd ordered is being backordered and wont be in for a little while -- no big deal since the weather has just now broke here in Ohio so I got a little time I guess.......but I'm considering buying a textile just for some cheaper protection temporarily ( and for hotter riding days ) and have not had any experience with them -- has anyone got an answer as to how well these jackets do for protection against fast moving asphalt? I've heard a couple horror stories about them burning/melting when you hit the street at speed and don't want to waste my money on one if it won't keep me safe.

I went down on the freeway in Fieldsheer Mesh and wasn't touched. The only real injury I had was a bruise on my wrist from wearing my wrist watch. But the mesh and textile both have padding where it counts. And some of the material did look sort of melted away but it hardly touched the pads underneath.

Did you have to look specifically for a "flame retardant" jacket or are they pretty much all that way?

I'm thinking alot of it depends on your body mass as to how well textile holds up when you are sliding. I went down in 06 and had a nylon race suit torn off me just about. A lightweight friend hardly had a tear in his and he slid almost 100ft further.

FIT also has a huge factor in how well it protects you. If it's loose...don't plan on it doing too well.

Gotcha.......so basically use the same principles as when shopping for leather to ensure the best protection.

yes...thicker textile is better...the higher the number 400 vs 600 denier, 600 is thicker.

Also consider this to be one time use stuff...it won't survive a crash very well, but it should protect you fairly well. Not as good as leather, but better than squidwear.

True weight may be a factor, I am pretty light at 160lbs. And I also agree with Quarter Pounder, fit is definitely a big factor in protection as well.

I went downabout a year ago in a Joe Rocket 2.0 something and it shredded. Seams on the sides tore open, the sleeves tore open at the shoulder, plus tearing up fabric from sliding. NOT impressed at all. Still have residuals from that one. .

Went down 18 months ago in leather jeans but with a textile Spidi jacket. The shoulder of the jacket was ripped out but the body armour saved me from gravel rash. I ended up with the acromio-clavicular joint in my right shoulder detroyed but it probably would have been the same in a leather jacket because it was the impact which did the damage. One operation and a lot of physio and gym work later my shoulder is ok again.

If you wear textile bike clothing make sure it's fitted with approved body armour.

On the plus side, I ended up talking with lots of people at the gym who I hadn't spoken to before when I turned up with my arm in a sling.

Was that the high side from hell or did the bike hit something and flip? Horrible to see I'm sure. Hate seeing friends eat it -- had a buddy at Deals Gap go low side thru a ditch but his bike flipped right off the side of a pretty steep hill. He faired well but the bike didn't at all -- saved the frame / engine / swing n forks / wheels.......but all else was lost. Subframe was folded over the tank -- only funny part was that it didn't touch a single tree all the way down

I would say fit is #1: been down a few times in textile, the times that I had tight fitting jacket/pants I was fine, just sliding along on my GP armor while wondering just how long it would last on the pavement... luckily it was long enough! The other time, it was looser fitting textile- had lost some weight and didnt buy new as I thought it was fine since it fit like my regular street clothes. WRONG! Problem is, the foam and hard armor immediately slides over upon the start of the slide, twisty the legs and sleeves over until they finally bind. Which in my case left my elbow armor on the inside of my arm, and my knee pads halfway around my knee/calf. 20mph getoff and I was road rashed! I was pissd and have been using leather ever since.

Weight is a close #2: the heavier you are, the thicker the leather. Notice I didnt say textile OR leather? Being 6'5" and over 320lbs I can vouche for that.

I understand.........well I may need to hold out for the leather then since I'm 285 @ 6ft myself

Physics 101 - with the right abrasion coefficient, anything will shred up. hopefully the CE armor within will stay entact.

Rev'IT!, Vanson, Dainese, or the other high end brands of mesh/textiles/leather will of course hold up better than the cheap stuff, but get your checkbook out for those

Thanks Steve, and I've got a Dainese on backorder now........they are a costly little item, but there's quite a few weekend racers that love 'em so thought I'd give a try. Plus they run way cheaper than most any skin clinic repair bill!!

Yikes and only at 65mph!
I was wearing a Leather jacket and jeans and going 100+ when i crashed on june 15 or '08.
Alls i had was a bit of rash on my left knee which left a pretty good scar , and some bruises.
I thank god for the dirt and the side of the mountain that was covered in soft foliage that cushioned my slide. If the accident happened on just asphalt alone i'd be F.U.B.A.R !
If i had my full leathers on like i usually do nonthing would have happened to me but bruises. Heck even textile pants would have faired better than Wrangler jeans lol!

he was cruising along talking back and forth with me and his throttle return cable snapped letting the bike go WOT and hang. He just so happened to be in 1st gear and had to bail. The bike rode a wheelie by itself for a little bit then looped. From the initial point of impact it went rougly 350 yards. The battery came off and was thrown into the air exploding on impact. The CHP officer that came up on the crash told him that he had to have been trying to stunt because the CHP's BMW R1100S won't even pull the front wheel like that and it has 100 more CC's lmfao.
