massive valve cover leak
alright bought my bike second hand, this winder found the front right valve cover bolt snapped offed and rtvd to shit, bolt is still in the head whats the easiest way to fix this because the valve cover is leaking pretty good, I was thinking id pull all six out see if I can grab ahold of it with some pliers and take whats left of the bolt out of the head, any other suggestions

I would remove the cover, and try to get a grip on the broken bolt, as you have suggested. I would also want to inspect all of the bolts and mounting points. Then I would install a new gasket and grommets, and replace any damaged bolts.

figured as much, all the other bolts seam to be fine, seems like after I get the coils out I should be able to atleast lift the cover up and get a grab of the bolt, snapped off just under the shoulder, Ill have to go order a new bolt and gasket from the local shop, thanks for the advice

Also, I believe it is common to stack some sort of additional washer(s) on top of the grommets, in order give some extra clamping force without bottoming out the bolts. Others can elaborate on that, I'm sure.
I haven't had a significant leak on mine, so I have not messed with it.

adding the washers was how I found the broken bolt, someone did the front 3 but left the back 3 alone, strange...

Good luck getting the broke of threads out , at worst you can drill it out for a removal tool, if you screw up their , It's a hela coil insert !
check all bolt's carefully , some people belive the way to fix a cover leak is to tighten the bolt's more !
use 1 washer per bolt , new gasket, formagasket #2 on the bolt washer faces tighten with 1/4 inch drive tools , this stuff is small be carefull when tighting them down inside to outer sequence.
Leave the silcone for better use's , there is nothing strange about humans thinking they can fix somthing they don't know shit about or how to fix it right !
Send the last owner a bill when your done!!

haha thats a good idea! it use to leak a little now it leaks a lot, Ill snap a pic of the oil coming down the side of my bike from a 60 mile ride! should be a pretty easy fix, suppose to rain this week so ill have plenty of time!

A massive leak?
Like so?
Been leaking lightly for 20k miles then the gasket failed. Did the new gasket & washer fix. No problem now. Checked valves and changed plugs while I was at it.

Oh yea. Was pretending to be a old shovelhead. Smelled it on the headers on the ride home. Never did get outside the fairing before the gasket went.
You can see the fresh oil on the lower pipes.

ya but mine was on the other side not the common leak point, I litterally had oil drippind down the seam between the mid and the lower and is all over my pants from wind, I got the end of the bolt out without pulling the cover so the gasket should still be good, ordered a new gromet and bolt wont be in till friday at the earliest im cursing who ever did it but least the bike will be ready for track opening mid april

Mine has never leaked and is still on the original gasket with regular valve checks @ almost 60k on the clock.

ya i puslled an easy out from my kit and put it in the hole and noticed it started to twist out just by spinning it haha im like YES! god doesnt hate me

Oh thats sweet! I lost count of how many broken bolts that have been a major pain in the ass. The worst ones were the ones that the easy out broke off in and were SOL to get out cause nothing can drill that hard ass easyout metal out!
A more recent memory of mine wasn't even a bolt. It was a tap that got permenantly stuck while trying to retap an exhaust stud on a Katuna.
That bitch would not come out !

Yes almost ... But not too far off cause the ones I've delt with made me want to toss them out a window. Then there's the broken bolts

hahaha my dad did the same thing on a katana, his answer was to put it a little further in, apparently he went too far and struck oil! hahaha wish i was there to hear the words that came out of his mouth, think he did an old jb weld fixxer upper on it haha

Lmao! It's a small world when a broken bolt is involved
I thought about going in further but I realized that I might hit oil and have a bigger problem or if the tap broke that would be worst. So the tap stayed there lol!
