Rod & main bearing selection
Can anybody advise what the correct way to select crank and rod bearings is??
This is for a motor that spun a rod bearing and we are using a donor crank and donor rod from another motor but we need to know what the procedure is in order to purchase the correct colour of new shells as the existing shells dont seem to have any clear colour codeing on them. The only thing that we are sure about is that the ruined crank had 2 white paint marks on it and the good donor crank has 4 white paint marks on it.
Appreciate any info.

There is a process for this layed out in the manual.
The block and cranks, have markings which will determine what bearings you are after.
I didn't heed it much, I went after a specific clearance.

natural selection.....
destiny will overcome intervention.
Some are not worthy of the effort.

JBR, We can build this engine over the net, 3 different ways. How do you want it done?
Go to your engine case, stand in front of the case. The #1 crank web begins at cylinder 4. You now have 5 marks you need to read off from left to right, we remember standing in front of case.
There will be a "O" that correlates with the web or a web remains a blank. So say the case reads as follows:
1 2 3 4 5 < Say 2 is blank.
O O O O
____________________________________
That was the case [markings] above. Now we need the crank number is a 1 and no marking on the next crank journal and so forth.
There will be a 1 on a journal side and no marking on a journal side. If we build this imaginary case with a used crank as you read cylinder 4's first crankshaft journal. It might read as follows:
1 2 3 4 5
1 1
______________________________________
The next step is to cross reference 1 3 5 using their own bearings and 2 4 using a different size bearing. You give me those 10 markings, we [with FSM] will send in the part numbers to match crank to case. Order these part number inserts. You can double-check with plastigage for clearance or run it without checking; you are running a used part so who cares is the fast assemble on a low miler crank journal.
If you want to blueprint this thing, tighten bearings down, then we can swap 6 bearing halves 12 ways just for starters. You call the massage build. I got your back is clean fingernails on my end no fucking aroundis time.
It gets easy you follow along in a book, John Bul. We have a book, yes or no? We play my way or tell me to bail out of the build you don't think I can handle this engine blind folded. JK ding!
Send in the parts list.

you need a 0-1 in mic, a 1-2 in mic, and a bore gauge. measure everything, and go for a uniform clearance. remember to mic the shells as they can vary. pair similar sizes. you may need to size the rods at a machine shop to get an exact clearance
