15T sprocket
My buddy wants to try to add some more gearing to his bike, and instead of buying $100+ worth of stuff for rear sprocket, chain links, master links, etc why can't he go to a 15t front sprocket? Haven't I seen busas run a 15t on a 530 chain? What do you guys think? I think it would be a lot cheaper, and he wouldn't have to take the bike to the shop to have the master links pressed on.... Would that small of a sprocket hurt the transmission?

the chain wont like it, but im sure it can be done. my buddy ran a -2 +2 combo on his gixxie1000. didnt leave it on for very long however, so the longevity of doing this...is up in the air

+1 chain will wear out a lot faster. I am not a big fan of small front sprockets.
I was told years ago you gain a little more torque by gearing at the rear sprocket.

adding a 15 is a cheap way to see if you like that gearing, then you can spend on the appropriate rear, vs spending on the rear and finding out its not the gearing you want.

The Busa guys run -2 in the front but the 08-09 has 18-43 factory gearing.
15T front is only recommended with a 520 pitch chain,
I have my track gsxr 750 at 15/44 (-2/-1).

When I had a Ducati, I put a 14 on the front, stock is 15, and it made a weird wining noise at certain rpm's.
That didn't last long, l change make to stock size shortly after.
Also, the chain guide on the top and bottom of the swing arm get more abuse.

Chains have gotten so much better than the old non O ring chains on old early 70's 750 Honda and a clip master link sucked. I learned this the hard way back then. Rivet the
master link.....be Sure. I always used a OEM front sprocket on every fast bike I have had after the old Honda broke a inner link at the track one night. Us older riders had big time shit keeping up with chain back then. Less Bend on front sprocket is safer and longer chain life Some guys just like to hide the different ratio :-) Pizza sprockets says it all.. Not saying it won't work OK and not break but I am still here 35 years later.
Stan -2/-1 dialed in the ratio for your local track??? -1 was like almost +2 on rear?

I use the lightest 520 chain and sprockets on the market- the DID ERV3 and AFAM.
Stock gearing is 17/45 and I refuse to use a larger rear sprocket,
so I went with a 15T front and switch b/n 44 and 45T rear which gives me the gear ratios that work for my two local tracks. I usually use two complete rear wheel assemblies,
one with a 190/55 tire and the other with a 180/55- the 190 has the 45T since it's taller and slightly heavier.
Here's a shameless plug with my 750 build thread:

+1. I do this on all my bikes, even dirt bikes. Cheap way to experiment with gearing before spending money on final gearing/chain combo.
