ThAT is from a bad factory paint job! Someone left some oil residue before priming!!

POR-15 is great stuff. I used it to restore my Porsche 356 pan.

I have been using paint thinner for years on chains AND rear painted rims. I just wipe down the rim afterwords with soap and water and rewax so the lube is easier to wipe off. My rims are just as shinny as the front ones that I dont wipe with paint thinner.

Really looks great with a lot of ARMOR ALL on the tires....Just kidding, dont do it!!

Well crap! Today I uncovered my 14 that has been in my garage all winter to give it a fresh coat of wax, when I saw it. Rust bubbles around the gastank filler neck. I keep my bike inside, covered, clean, waxed and still this happened. I regulary removed the gas cap to clean and wax the neck area. Looks like crap now in in the market for a new midnight metallic blue tank. I also noticed that the 2 clips on the tank that hold the seat on have rusted badly under the surrounding paint.

You can get used ones fairly cheap on ebay. If it's rusted too bad it might be cheaper to replace it rather than clean, repair & repaint.

3000psi, I havesame bike bought in March 08. all the same spots of rust but very mild. Just stains. Saw them after year 1. Nothing inside the filler neck ever. That sounds like a condensation problem to me. Perhaps use a small dose of Seafoam additive to eliminate moisture. I do that just a couple ounces every other tank, 1oz/gallon during storage.

Any time the bike gets wet, I always take the seat off, wipe and let air dry before replacing seat. seems to have prevented any further deterioration.

Rook,
I always remove the seat before washing my bike, and dry every spot with compressed air and my home made bike shop vac dryer and ofcoarse only the finest towels I can find. I am sure the rusting was caused from a less than ideal factory paint job on the tank. I have many other sportbikes and care for them in the same way and not one has ever had rust issues. After hearing others here that have found signs of rusting I'm sure this will be a growing problem with many 14's. And any spot spot of rust anyone spots on there 14s gas tank is,, much bigger under the paint than you would ever think!
For now I used " metal ready" to dissolve all the rust then clear coated and wet sanded the area to buy me some time.

Here are a few shots of the rust dammage areas being repaired for now untill I can find a good replacement tank, before I started picking and sanding it looked like very minor rust (streaking stains on paint, pitting) but hiding underneath is cancer! and lots of it.
The first is the tank pad area under the seat, I had to remove all the old paint.
Next you can see the rust around the seat hooks.
Last is the rust spots and bubbling on top of the tank on and close to the filler neck, it is doing this in many places on top of the tank even far away from the filler neck.

Update. The spots around the gas cap are not rust. They are spots where the paint did not adhere to the tank, the metal is brass in this area??

Also finished the rust damage on the tank under the seat. Took the whole areaa down to bare metal, nice tape job, 30 min of metal ready, then 2 LIGHT coats of POR-15 black. Turned out way better this time, took my time masking and did not rush the painting or put it on to thick like last time.

I'm pissed as hell right know I wiped my tank off yesterday and a 2 inch by 1/4 inch spot of paint came right off what really pisses me off is there looks to be no primer under the paint what so ever and this same crap happened on my Blue 06 14 guess from 06 to 2010 kawasakis paint still sucks. it's down low to the back of the tank. I seen the paint bubbles and knew it was fuked.

I was lucky and all the damage is covered by the seat, plus the por15 almost matches the paint perfectly in low light, so knowone would even think any repair was ever made there. Mine did have primer under the base coat, but it was hit and miss. Do you have any pictures of your paint flaking off?

I looked at my paint under the gas tank and seat. Everything is fine. I guess I got lucky my Black 2007 looks Great in sun with silver metallic popping out :-) sorry some of you are having problems. I ride with 4 other ZX-14 and none of their have rust problems. Climate in Texas is Hot and Dry in the DFW area. Are you parking it under a bike cover? In a damp shop or outside?? Wait until the bike has cooled off before covering it up for the night. Just guessing why some do this.

I have lived all over with my 08, Houston, St. Paul MN, Oak Harbor WA, ALBQ NM never left outside, keept clean as can be, with a dry wash after every ride and a wet wash after driving through rain or once every few weeks or so. As you can see from this post ive repaired mine well with por-15. And what I thought was rust around the gas cap was the brass brazing showing through in a few spots where the paint did not stick well. (pin head sized spots). If your bike has ever been wet, peel off the foam on the tank and I bet you find some degree of rusting.
