One thing I do when I wash my bike is to use a leaf blower before I towel dry. There are so many cracks and crevises to trap water that could cause rust or just simple water spotting that you see on older bikes around areas like brakes and motors. If you dont have a leaf blower then take a quick but fast ride to let the natural wind blow off the excess. By the way Por-15 is a great product.
Exactly what I do. But I also use my blowgun from the air compressor to blow out around bolts and whatnot before I ride it.

I was using my blowgun from my air compressor as well but I know there is a small amount of oil residue that will come from all air compressors so I use the leaf blower instead.

Another trick I love is to use paint thinner to clean the chain and drive wheel. Works great and is super cheap. Doesent hurt the paint on the wheel and keeps any rubber seals in the chain soft. You should see how much dirt comes from a clean lookng chain!

Holly cow..........Paint thinner............People must be careful using paint thinner, Like Lacquer will destroy most any type of finish. Your probably using a mineral spirits type base thinner, not nearly as dangerous.
I like WD-40 for the chain...........it will cut the build up of grease and grim, and doesn't seem to endanger the O-rings.

+1 on WD-40 for cleaning chain. Never used paint thinner or gasoline to clean

chains, even on a dirt bike.

I use a shop vac with a home made jet tip to help dry mine. Its very fast, filtered air. That is the only job this shop vac does, I was much cheaper to buy a big crastman shop vac then a warm air dryer..

Here is my repair. Not very pretty, I put it on very thick to ensure I wont have any rusting issues here again. This one spot on my gas tank will last till the stars go dark. I removed all the paint and rust down to clean metal before applying the por15. Tip for anyone using por-15 paint, use thin coats, I put two thick coats and ended up with lots of small bubbles in the paint. I'll sand it smooth and apply one more coat in a few days after the paint dries enough to sand. I dont see any real reason to replace the foam padding, so im going to try it with out for now.

Wow ! I must say that is a very strange spot for rust to form for no reason.
But it is a perfect spot for rust to form if water is put there on a regular basis.
Anywhere water is allowed to puddle or stand for a long period of time will have the same results.
Now it also could have been a spot that didn't receive a good of paint to seal up the metal adequately.
And it could've happened to a number of bikes in that case.

Just checked the tanks on both the Red and Blue bikes. Dammit my Red one's starting to rust!!!
The blue one still looks show room.
Everyone check your tanks and nip the rust in the bud before it turns into full blown cancer!

3000psi and falling - That is really bad! I feel for you man.... I wash and wax mine about 4-5 times a week. I normally use Turtle Wax 1 Step Spray and use a polisher(Liquid Glass-can) with an orbiter every 3-4 months. That keeps my 06 in pristine condition. I still have people(who doesn't know about 14s) ask me what year my bike is and are amaze to hear that it's a 06. I'm here in FL and it gets hot as Sh*t and I ride to the coast often. If I can suggest just picking up some of the products I've used, I think you may be pleased with how things will turn around. Only if you deem it necessary, Best Regards!

I guess im pretty fucked then, they both sleep in the same garage next to each other lol. I looked under my seat, no rust, but then again the previous owner said he has never seen water since its always been dry cleaned with a microfiber.

Both the Red and Blue 14's only see water when riding in the rain or washing the wheels. The Red one has seen way more rain action though and that has to be where the rust is from.

This rust is beyond wax. It's sandpaper, por-15 ,and new paint time!
