08 ZX-14 tank rusting badly
Spent yesterday hand polishing the bike, I had removed the seat to polish/wax the all of the pain on the tank. It was then that I saw bubbles in the paint all around the foam pad on the gas tank. So I started pokin around the area and the paint and rust flakes started flakeing off with my fingers!
So I removed the foam pads, and started sanding away the paint and rust. I had to remove the paint almost to the edge of where the seat covers it when in place on both sides of the tank. I used POR-15's cleaner, metal ready, and there rust stoping paint. With the seat on the repair is not visible, but it was close.
The problem is with the plate welded on the tank under the foam that traps water along with the foam pad. If anyone els has this problem, Check your auto parts store for a POR-15 starter kit. Its 20.00 bucks and worth every cent. Ive used it before and it works better then anyother rust control product out there hands down. I dont think I will re install the foam pads, I'll try to think of another way to pad the seat from chafing the paint.
This bike is never left outside, im not to happy that the bike is not even 2 years old and this has happend.

My '06 shows signs of wanting to do this, rust streaks running down from the plate welded on. Fortunatly I caught it before I had to take any severe action. Now I regularly clean out the area & wax before it starts up again. Mine also lives inside but does get rained on & washed which is enough to start the rusting. I haven't painted over the area yet but might someday if it gets worse. I also don't have any foam pads under there, so It doesn't sit there holding in the water.

My 09' has the same issue. It has surface rust only at this point but it is kind of shitty.

I just removed the gas cap and see the same thing. Its not very bad, but its working its way up. Ill be fixing this area to then tonight.

Its because you can use your magnetic tank bags lol i dunno, that's a good question. Maybe because aluminum is alot easier to rupture on a lay down then steel?

I'm thinking strictly for crash reasons. It is probably less likely to fail in the event of a get off than a aluminum tank. Just my thoughts. I have no proof that this is the reason.

Didn't know it had pads until you mentioned it, no signs of wear I see. Yep I live a couple miles from the ocean, If the winds up I got salt spray on my windshield. However it had the rust before I got it, it was in a storage unit with 3 other bikes. I don't think the first owner kept it very clean. It's not too bad but it could be if left alone too long.

That's a very strange condition you have happening there!
Both mine and my dads 14's are 06's and have no signs of rust any where on their tanks.
They are both always garaged and the only water that they see is from washing the wheels,or riding in the rain.
I use a waterless cleaning system for the bodywork.
Do you hose down the entire bike when washing?
If so that would explain rust there cause water sitting in that spot will eventually find a way to rust.

now that i recall, i did notice a bit of "rust" on the inside of the tank vent. not a big deal as long as it doesnt hit the paint im good

I wash mine with water, but I have a really hardtime keeping it clean bc of our driveway. It can get pretty nasty

One thing I do when I wash my bike is to use a leaf blower before I towel dry. There are so many cracks and crevises to trap water that could cause rust or just simple water spotting that you see on older bikes around areas like brakes and motors. If you dont have a leaf blower then take a quick but fast ride to let the natural wind blow off the excess. By the way Por-15 is a great product.
