the 10 was also down 20+ hp compared to the new bimmer. If it responds well to mods and the clutch problem can be solved then it will be a force to be reckoned with. Hell, seeing that it's lighter than a gsxr and has damn near 200hp I could see it being a monster with a long arm and a hays clutch. Lets just hope that suzuki and Kawasaki strike back sooner than later :P.

All of this talk of the other manufacturers "striking back" is a little premature...

You drag race this new beemer you better buy stock in the company that makes the clutches .. Sure it will out MPH my zx14 in roll on race .(maybe ). But 1000s are not all that good at short times at the strip on stock wheel base ..My 08 zx10 was a bear top end but even with gears , clutch mods it never came close to the zx14 numbers ...I'm not saying this new 1000r will not run faster than my zx14 , hell i hope it goes way faster but we will have to wait and see if it can ..If this thing it a true killer like brock feels it is and the clutch will hold up i'd be in line for one asap !!!!

If we go by their (BMW's) claim everything is 20+ hp down,my point was that the ZX10 for the most part was always acknowledged as having the strongest motor in the class for years but it never translated into drag racing success, when I asked why (on Psychobike)most all in the know pointed to the very tall 1 st gear as being the reason why.

Brock did mention a super tall 1st gear as being an issue with the bike, when I posed a question a while back about the ZX10 not being well represented in 1000SS people commented on the very tall 1st gear being a big problem with the ZX10 so now BMW is obviously throwing money around so it seems the aftemarket is rallying around this bike tall 1st gear or no. ZX10's were always acknowledged as having great engines and the aftermarket, drag racing aftermarket that is stayed away so now to me it seems if the manufacturer does not get behind the bike the aftermarket will stay away..like they did with the ZX10 a bike with a great powerplant and no support from Kawasaki....sad. Will be interesting to see the #'s this BMW puts down and how it will hold up,supposedly BMW has done extensive testing on this bike so durability should not be an issue. Drag racers will cetainly expose any clutch issues it may or may not have.

Gearing? Seriously? That's your knock on the zx10?
How's the gearing on the R1 and gsxr 1000?
A 520 conversion with AFAM sprockets and the lightest chain on the market (DID ERV3!)
will run you less than $220- all your problems solved!

What aftermarket brand doesn't make stuff for the 10r? You can have any aftermarket exhaust, any fuel management, any wheels, any suspension etc.

The 08-09 zx10r is an absolute beast, ride one and post again

Masszx14 you are mis understanding me,its not my knock on the bike,I posted on Psychobike as to why there are no ZX10's in 1000SS. The 1000SS racers/tuners who replied stated the tall 1st gear on the ZX10 kept it from being competitive, not from a sprocket change perspective but from its internal 1st gear ratio. Now you tell me up until the introduction of the BMW why hasnt the strongest motored 1000cc bike available (ZX10R) has never ever been a factor in this series even with the so called great aftermarket support??

I see what you're saying and I ask myself the same thing. Stock for stock, the zx10 makes the best power and will beat any stock bike in a freeway roll-on, but it isn't a popular bike at the strip..... why is that?

My 05 zx10 was faster than my 08 zx10 ..The 05 had a stronger mid range than the 08 .. I rolled on with my friends Gixxer many times with the the 05 zx10 and i put bikes on him no problem ..I raced him with my 08 zx10 and no matter what i tried i could not get around him..Over all the 05 zx10 felt much stronger ...My 08 zx14 geared, piped and tuned only ran the best of 9.18 at somewhere around 148 149 if i remember correctly ..I guess I could have got a lemon .. It did feel like it had a real good strong hit up top but by then it was to late ..
I think the only thing that could have helped that bike was that Robinson low first gear offered by Muzzy and others .. Even with a 15/ 45/ 46/ 48 gear set the bike just would not 60 foot or 330 well .. Don't take me wrong , it was a great bike but was lacking as a drag bike ..

If this beemer has a strong low and mid range it maybe a fast drag bike ..I think even with the HP numbers we are hearing it will still need a lower first gear just like the zx10 ..I could be wrong .....Maybe we will all find out this coming weekend at Prostar ...

beemer is getting a lot of deserved attention and as I've been sayn' will be penetrating major market share in the litre bike arena. and BMW listened to bawl's "I hate drive shafts" complaint and found a chain

did the article really start with:

the clutch is already confirmed as fucked... that's why brock davidson told owners not to launch them until he came up with a fix.

A very well written article by Brock. Most of the UK buyers will be collecting their bikes today as our date specific registration plates change on 1st March.

My hope is that the Japanese bike builders will up their game now and we will all benefit in the long run.

Now BMW needs to announce a S1500R with CHAIN drive and similar or better technolgy as the S1000RR. I really wonder if what else is the pipeline? We need another true contender in the 1300-1400 cc bracket.

We can't be looking at the BMW through dragrace glasses. Not the bike's intended purpose. The clutch is what it should be for a roadracer. Dragbikes need the forward movement enhancements of a clutch where a roadracer needs deceleration and downshifting enhancements.
