Is this good price on a big bore zx14 motor?

I talked to Brian at quantum motorsports after reading in another thread about him doing great work on zx14 motors. He said he would rebuild my zx14 with a big bore, degree the cam, new harmonic balancers, and I could just drive the bike in and total cost would be $3600. Is that a good deal? What is degree the cam? He says I would be getting about 210 horsepower out of it.

Labor is 1500 everything else is parts and boring. Adams charges the same 1500 for labor flat rate whether it's a stroker, 2mil, turbo build etc etc

Brian builds some of the fastest bikes in the country! He knows his stuff for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to take my bike to him for work.

Changing the cam timing. Can move power to mid and top end or low end. Head work will probably net another 8+ hp

I think so. What options did you guys discuss? 2 mil pistons and boring will be about 1250 cam sprockets 70 heavy duty springs 150-350

It would be bored, cam sprockets, degree the cam, new harmonic balancers, all new gaskets, new bearings. Is there any room for negotiation? Should I offer less?

He was probably talking about replacing the counterbalancers with dummy shafts.

Let me ask ...If you don't race or run the bike hard why a built motor? You said in your other post you ride like an old lady ...But you want to spend 3k for a hot rod motor?

The knocking on my bike has me a little uneasy. Maybe I'm overreacting but I'm just exploring my options in a worse case scenario situation. If my motor ever goes out then it's either buy another bike or have the current motor rebuilt. Going the rebuilt option is much cheaper and if it's gonna be tore apart I might as well have some power built into it. It's good to know if it does go out it's within the budget to get it built.

Well if it has to be rebuilt Brian will do you a fine job for sure.. I have not heard your bike but i wouldn't think you would have an engine problem with 5000 easy miles ...If Brian is close to you why not let him take a look at it and tell you what he thinks ?

I just finished a ZX14 motor build. The price is reasonable. Bantering about HP numbers is another matter. My motor was +2mm, ported head, +1mm valves, custom grind cams, new springs and retainers. It made 216 “DynoJet horsepower” with significant torque gains.

I am not saying the guy is dishonest about horsepower but what you really want to know is where you are now and what percentage gains the build will bring. HP can be measured so many ways by so many devices numbers should be approached with caution.

Then it becomes a percent increase per dollar equation. That’s the number you really want to know to figure the bang for your buck.

If your motor is knocking you could be in for a surprise. If the bottom end is worn you many need seriously expensive crank work. When does the knocking occur? If it happens while accelerating it may be detonation. Did you add a pipe and not have the fuel remapped? Just loading a map does not always give good results. Shoot you K&N maybe dirty causing the engine to lean out and detonate.

Get a baseline dyno with mapping, decide what you want from the motor, then talk to a reputable mechanic at length about what work needs to be done. Take your time.

I never noticed any knocking till I got my pipe and pc3. I'm using a map from Brocks. It's more like a valve tapping sound. It's not all the time just in the lower rpm ranges. I'm using 5w40 shell rotella T oil but I was told that wouldn't cause that. I'll use a new map and see what that does.

Any dyno guys in Fort Worth Tx?

No offense, man..please take this constructively:

It doesn't seem like you have a lot of experience with the mechanical aspects of your motorcycle. I doubt that there is anything wrong with your motor. If you are really worried about the sound, take it to a reputable shop for inspection.

Otherwise you are just wasting your time and worry.

If the sound is a tapping sound, and it came after the new exhaust, check the header flange nut tightness again. They will sometimes loosen up after a new install. Usually things are more simple than you would think.
