Good information on how to read the age code and for anyone who was unaware of the problem.
I had a rear tread strip off my 3 series BMW at 80mph a few years back. Thanks to the design of the car it stayed straight and true while I slowed it down. It was worrying to see those cars losing control on the ABC news story, was that just for maximum impact?

I had witness a older MG blow out a rear tire right in front of me on a multi-lane highway, he did a 360 before slowing down and using a extra lane to do that.
You have no control over a rear tire failure like that, unless your lucky that your newer car has some kind of traction control and it actually would work.
When I sold tires for a living, I would always advise customers to put the worse (older more suspect) tires on the front, in the event they had a failure, one would have the ability to steer out of a possible spin out. Not worth it just to replace tires in pairs, a practice in the past, because customers were using snow tires (north east) back then. There would always be a pair in better condition, so people would buy their tires in pairs. Nowadays, we have multi-use tires,(MS), making more sense to replace a set of 4.

That same thing happened to me a long time ago while driving my friends Monte Carlo home from a club one night..................................at 130+mph. It bent the tailpipe and tore off the trim on the right rear 1/4 panel, but we didn't spin out. Even after a "few" drinks, the car held it's lane. The tire was down to the nylon cords & made funny sounds when doing a burnout.
