ooooh Sh*t!!

So I finally got my bike to where I can run it for the first time in months just to see how the new exhaust sounds...and what lovely noise do I hear when it starts?? A VERY loud tapping coming from top end. This is all I have changed on it so far

APE manual cam tensioner
Full exhaust (its not a leak I'm sure)
Smog plates
Removed rubber insulation
Muzzy timing plate

I hope to jesus christo its just the adjustment on the tensioner..anyone else have this issue? Shane??

Are you sure it isnt an exhaust leak? They will sound just like a valve tick.

I set it according to the direction on the back of the package. Rotate engine until you feel the cam tensioner contact parts(guide rollers chain) then back off a 1/4 turn.

Its louder than a valve tick..I guess ill just have to double check..I didn't want it to run long like that, just hopin its a leak.

May just throw the auto tensioner back on to see if that's the cause

I still have the auto tensioner, but an exhaust leak at the header will tap like hell.

Play it safe.

For sure shane. I'm gonna put the auto tensioner back in and see what happens. I put new exhaust gaskets in when installing my exhaust.

But they can leak until you retighten them after a heat cycle. I hope that is the case.

Yeah me too. As we speak I'm trying to adjust the manual one again...have the timing cover off and rotating the engine with my hand on the tensioner to "feel" when they're supposed to make contact. Had the damn thing damn near buried and "felt" nothing.

The auto tensioner isn't easy to get back in...

Bob carpenter sells a ZX-12 CCT modded that adapts to a 14. Does not use oil pressure :-)

I was going to replace but after a year it does not bother me as much when I start on cold engine. 1 second later all is quiet. APE makes good parts, used a manual CCT from them many years ago on FJ1200. Worked great street and Track Bike. Call them.

Pretty much all of the 14's with oem tensioners make a little noise on startup. Mine certainly does.

Then there is definitely no reason to change the tensioner. Even if it did rattle a little on start, I wouldn't put a manual tensioner on it. There are instances where a manual is preferred, but this isn't one of them.

agreed. if it aint broke dont fix it. i was just under the impression from what APE describes, that the auto WILL fail sooner or later and then your cam chain will jump teeth and yadda yadda

manual tensioner is great for the people that know how and when to adjust them.
Very is to cause yourself problem with it if you don't know what you are doing.

Wow that's surprising that you had the tensioner adjusted all the way and it was still making noise.
Almost sounds like the wrong part was shipped to you.
One of these days I'm gonna get a better cct than the stock one cause mine has a mind of its own.
It has been working flawless for quite a while now but a while back it had me thinking when it
decided to rattle after I took off to redline and stopped for the traffic light. And the bike was already warmed up and not rattling.
Also once in a blue moon she will rattle for a long time after startup before she quies down.
I hate that shit lol!

Yeah its great for someone that wants to deal with it. I however don't. Its not worth the risk of messing with it anyways when the stock works just fine.

If you have one, and know how to adjust it, please shed light on it.

When it comes to installing a manual tensioner on a street bike without a history of oem tensioner failures...

I just keep asking....why???
