To do it properly, you should have the tool set, made by motion pro or rk. What you do is carefully grind the swedge from the pins on the link you are going to remove, then use the tool to press it out. You will need to purchase a new swedge type link and use the tool to install and put the swedge on it. Good advice is not to use clip typ links except for an emergency repair.

We had the debate about split links (clip type) in my club recently. A lot of the riders who's bikes run long swing arms and those who change gearing frequently use these links. I was dubious but they argued that the links are reliable.
Regarding the tool set to replace a rivet link: my one pearl of wisdom is to ensure that the link is still free to swivel and not too tight after riveting it.

Yup,
Those links are completely reliable till they let go!!! I know as long as the open end is to the rear, they should be ok.........

Do not re-use the clip part. or at least on a high H.P. bike.

I used the press on style. I've seen the clip ons with silicone on the clip, but that's the only way I would use the clip on.

Use a dremel with a cut off wheel to cut the end off the pin before pushing it out otherwise the tools pin will break. I would never use a clip link but I can see where a racer would want to change length without having to cut the chain, However their gearing changes may not be enough to matter to the length of the chain anyway.

4 " grinder grind off pin ends, pin punch, or small chisel pop off link plate, have had a clip come off and link plate , 130 MPH through the desert to Las vegas, only to wake up to a bike with a missing clip and link plate, they have better set up's out their, like the bolt on press fit type, then grind down their end's for clearence , or the rivet type , if you use the clip type epoxy it on , drag racers got more to worry about than chain links, for those of us tearing up american backroads ,it's a bigger worry !! I have noticed that the clip type vibrate till they wear lose, high power bike's realy shread them.
