Sec flies removal question
Tonight when I get home I'll be taking out the sec flies. I have all the plastics off and the four bolts holding the gas tank are exposed. I was just going to leave the fuel line attached and prop the tank up with a 2X4. Is it just as simple as undoing the bolts and proping the tank up? Is there any other connections or lines etc that will have to be loosend as well? Also got my Brocks Alienhead exhaust last night. Looks sweet!!

Two electrical connector need to be unplugged, four bolts taken off, two vent hoses off the back of tank, and one fuel line connection. Once all that is done the tank can just be set off to the side. You will not want to be working under the tank trying to get the flies out.
On this subject....whats the best method of getting them soft screws out to remove the flies? Heat? I am at this point right now and don't want to buggar things up. TIA

I agree with QP, its just as easy to remove the tank as taking chances propping it up. The fuel line is a quick release, the vent lines pull right off, you won't spill more than a drop of fuel at most. I bought a Klein screwdriver from Lowe's, put a bit of pressure down on the screws to keep the driver set (but not too much, you could bend the rods the flies are screwed to) and all the screws came right out. Some of the other guys on the board have suggested heating the tip of the screwdriver with a torch or iron.

When I pulled mine out I did not remove the tank I left it connected and just moved it off to the side (far easier). I put a small table beside the bike and a blanket so the tank did not get scratched and just shifted the tank and table to the other side when I wanted to get at the second pair.
As for removal of the screws I used a new screw driver and made sure I leaned on it a little when taking them out and no problems... then I used a pair of needle nose pliers to retrieve the screws and a magnet to remove the plate.
To say the least I am not an expert mechanic (I have changed my oil once myself and even then it was under supervision), but by the time I finished reading threads posted here I was fairly confident and had no problems at all.

The screws(flies) look like "Phillips" but the are J.I.S. drive screws. Wheelie had a thread about where to purchase the correct screw driver. Lots of us have done this with a new Phillips but some Not. PM Wheelie

just prop the tank up with a 2x4. There really isn't any reason to remove it. I went to sears and bought a brand new craftsman phillips but a lot of people us klein. Give your screws a little heat and they'll come right out. I did mine without heat by giving a light tap with the back with another screw driver to seat the driver in the screws, but people have been known to use their retard strength to bend the shaft so i don't suggest doing that if you have a soldering iron or something that you can use to heat the screws. It won't be long and you'll be part of the holy fuck why didn't i do this sooner club lol.

Leave them in if you have an 08 or 09.You wont notice anything.By the time you get a new pc pull the flys then get a new map and take it for your first ride it will feel like it did before. The KnN filter did more than the flys out a pc and the dyno tune. Most guys here will tell you that its a must but it didnt do anything for a few of us.Save your money and change the gears that will do something you can notice.

don't remove the tank it is unneccesary. 2x4 works fine. i actually rode the bike some to get things warm and did the job with a fresh #2 philips screwdriver. go slow and firm they will come out. do not open the throttle during this process! fly removal is recommended for all years.

If you do strip them, a bent nose pliers will take them right out with no problems. I did not remove my tank either, just moved it off to the side.
This is a MUST on the '07. You will crap yourt pants the first ride you take with them out. You can snap the front wheel up at 15mph in 1st so be carefull in the beginning especially if the road is wet.

Use the torch to heat the screwdriver not the screw. After you heat the screwdriver hold it on the screw for 20 seconds. The factory uses loctite which is heat sensitive. I did not unplug anything nor remove the tank. Use a #2 screwdriver.

I had a lot of anxiety before doing mine but it was very easy, used a new screw driver, warmed up the bike and tightened a little to get the screw moving then backed it out, having a magnetic pickup and magnetizing the screwdriver was a help also.
I left the gas tank connected and propped up.

The blow torch method worked best for me. I just got the phillips tip red hot and rested it on the screws a bit then poped em off with little effort.

zx14fan i must disagree bro
Fly removal is mandatory 14 mod no matter what year in my,and most others, opinion. If you can't feel your wrist is now in control of the throttle instead of the flys, you must have a really poor map. My 08 is a totally different machine that I can modulate the throttle safely now. Use to scare the hell out of me when it would power wheelie and the computer had control of the throttle. Now my wrist is the control. Just my 2 cents bro.

Just my $.02 about the tank, TAKE IT OFF!!! it's too easy to take off to be risking scratching it. Just a couple of VERY simple hoses And your done! If your yank falls while your trying this, I want to be the first to say itold you so.
Zx14fan, I disagree as well. You say "save your money and put toward a sprocket" WHAT?! IT'S FREE!
As for the screws, run the bike for a few min before removing the tank as that will warm the screws. Mine come out very easy without any type of heat. Let us know how it goes.
