Free weight savings?
I am getting ready to strip down the big Ninja for it's winter clean/preventive maint. I would like to get rid of any excess weight while I am at it.
Anyone have a comprehensive list already made up? Weight savings search didn't show anything. TIA

I've weighed lots of stuff:
http://www.bikeland.org/board/viewthread.php?FID=27&TID=40269&set_time=
The weights of many of the oem assemblies are listed.
Check the table of contents, and page through it.

Jon, you can start by giving up a rotor and caliper up front. You are light enough to where it wouldnt be much of an issue.

I think my next diet will be a front rotor. As I ride the bike on the street less, I don't think it will make much difference to me.

On my 06 i removed a lot of needless padding , small brackets and such .. If i remember right it was about 12 pounds of needless crap ... I haven't done this to my 09 yet but it's coming ...I never did remove a front rotor but Jesse did on his bike ...I didn't like how it stopped at the drag strip and i will not do it to mine ..

Are you talking about the heat shielding and noise padding?

Yes .. You would not believe how heavy the rubber padding under the tank and the one over the engine really are ..

I'll keep that intact on mine for now...I'd have to get a full upper race fairing to do that. You could fab up a single headlight deal to try and stay legal.

I'm no drag racer but how much faster does an extra 25 lbs cut off your time? I would think sharpening your skills at the strip and being in the best possible shape (no excess fat and healthy amount of muscle) so you'll have sharp reflexes would be the best way to go. Once you've reached your potential as a drag racer then start looking to drop that extra 10-15 lbs off the bike.

I usually figure 30-35 lbs. for .10, so even 25 lbs. can have a significant impact.
Of course, learning to ride better always pays off.

Dude...I'm 160lbs and in excellent shape. See signature line. Potential as a racer for me is seat time.
Getting excess weight off the bike is free HP and ET. So why your slack comment?

well if it's weight you can take off for free then I'm all for that. Just don't understand the 260lb guys paying top dollar to shave 4lbs off their bike.

One thing you have to realize is that some of us can carry 200+ lbs. with ease...and not be obese doing it.

easy there buddy... both of you guys are new enough to the site that people don't know how much you weigh and whatnot. if you do the math for your ET's & mph, with those 60 ft's it's pretty obvious that you're in really good air, and a light weight. You're getting it done for being stock wheelbase, but there is definitely room for improvement which you said yourself. I agree that less weight = free hp and ET, but the guy said that he wasn't a drag racer so he obviously didn't know how much it really affects us. Try to get your panties out of the wad that they're in and keep from ripping people's heads off.

I am not in that category. The big guys hate us little jockeys. I am down to making all the tweaks. One by itself is no big deal, but you add up all the little tweaks and then you have something. Would love to put on some lightweight wheels and cereamic bearings.

I'll see when I get the front end of the bike pulled apart and what is possible for me to do up there.

The weight of the headlight assembly is listed in my thread. But I'm not twisting anyone's arm to read it.
