quote: I think the BMW is overhyped to sell strong out of the gate just like every other new model that comes out. When the "actual" production bikes start rolling out of showrooms instead of the magazine/test ringers, I think its going to be just another fast liter bike......nothing mindblowing, just a fast competent literbike among a group of fast competent liters.
that wasn't the case with the aprilia V4, its way on top of the litre bike class right now and the one BMW has to knock down.

for 20 grand it better be... What do you think would happen if you level the cost with upgrades on a jap bike? The main thing that the bimmer has going for it that the aprilia doesn't is cost. As long as it's really 13,800 dollars for the base model and performs the way that they're promising it will it will be bad ass. If it ends up being closer to 15 then you can start buying parts to make up for the jap bikes being neutered. I have the feeling that the bimmers real problem is going to be that it'll only be competitive against stock bikes because i seriously doubt that there are going to be many parts available to those who want to go into the engine. Lee's cyles in san diego is routinely building 220-230 hp on their 1000's (which is what jeremy toye rides).
Only time will tell, but if i remember correctly bmw said that their plan was to podium in the first year and win the second.

the cheaper aprilia is 15K (and has the same HP/engine as the 20K model with the track suspension and carbon fiber bits)
The japs are being humbled.
the new beemer is in line with the gixxer and Yamaha 1000 cc bikes as well

The Uber beemer is going to get a lot buyers like myself who have never even looked at BMW. The japanese have been laying back with no hot new products and it will bite them in
the ass. Any company that thinks they can ride on their history is doomed. I hope they get
off their butts and do something, but 2010 looks like the year I buy a beemer.

Honda

New mxers
Suzuki
updated Gixxers

Kawasaki

all new 2009 650 models plus fresh Versys for 2010
all new Z1000
Dominant Mxers
And I dont pay enough attention for a good list
All the Jap liter bikes are off the hook!!! 170hp, traction control, ABS and all handle great. Oh yea excellent fueling, comfortable and extremely reliable. European bikes just cant match that. Usually fueling and/or reliability problems

Enjoy but I'd wait. BMW has a history with new model bugs. Lots of brand new untested components on this unit
And we will see how much difference that hyped power makes on the track and in the real world.
I 'm with you though, if you are hoping for new Hyperbikes.

i still say that the best bang for the buck is in jap bikes. The reason that I say that is this.
BMW costs 13,800 dollars. After the dealerships inflate the shit out of the prices and charge you a ridiculous amount for setup and shipping you're looking at 15k for it OTD.
Since there were no Real changes made for 2010 you can probably find a new 09 for 11k OTD on any of the jap litre bikes. That leaves you with 4k dollars difference. that leaves you enough money to put ohlins suspension or a set of BTS's and buy an exhaust. Now who's on top?

I do spend some time in caves old guy but, when I come out into the light I find that for the last few years the 600 class continues to advance and the 1k's have stalled a bit.
I have a 08 CBR1000RR and just brought home an 09 GSXR1000. Love my honda and the gixxer seems great but cold weather hit right after I got it. As for the new GP R1 dont believe
the hype, nice looking bike but the motor is WEAK!! I rode one for about 25 miles and in roll-ons against a friend on a bone stock CBR1000RR the yammy wasnt in the hunt. No one was more disappointed than me, I grew up on Yammys and really wanted another R1.
Anywhere from 3K to 7K it sounds great but no cajones. As for the beemer I have never owned one but if the bike performs like early reports say I'll try one.

LOL, glad you took that light.
Came off harsher than I intended.
I'm probably envious that I'm too old to actually ride your bikes close to their potential.
Nevermind the new Beemer!!
Nice thing is about the 1000rr. It will hold most of its value compared to our Jap bikes.
The Euro bikes are such works of art comparatively to Japanese mass produced rides.
And if kicks ass on all comers, well you will have a great scoot for years.
Wish BMW would have came out of their high performance cave decades ago. I would be joining you.
Now what will you do with 3 literbike monsters ??????

I hear you old guy every time I get on a new bike I dream about having it when I was 20.
These days I would even take being back in my thirties but you cant beat the clock.
A few years ago I bought a very nice CB1100F which was a bike from my high school years.
This was a bad mistake as your memories of the old days clash with reality, the bike was not what I had stored in my aging brain, the current bikes are incredible, but like any power junkie I crave more and hope that the HP and top end wars restart. The 186 MPH agreement has been widely publicized but I believe the Japanese must have agreed to 200 HP crank limit also.Look at how many bikes are rated at 197 or 198 HP. No one wants to say the words "200 HP".Political pressure more than engineering problems I'm sure.
