Counter sprocket nut won't budge.....what to do ??
Hi Guys,
I've got a little problem here. I was working on the bike this weekend trying to swap out the front sprocket back to the 17t from the 16t. The problem is that I couldn't get the damm thing off!
I first tried my impact gun (was supposed to have a lot of torque) and no luck. I thn tried to use a breaker bar and I had the wife hold the rear brake,,,,, again no luck.
I then used a bigger air line (3/8") on the impact gun, no luck. Then I used my benzomatic torch to heat the nut, and still no luck. I only got it warm, not blazing hot because I wanted to save the rubber damped sprocket.
I then went out to Homodepot & bought thier 2nd from the top impact gun rated at 550 ft/lbs and still no luck.
My last attempt was to put a 5' pipe on the breaker bar and have a friend of mine STAND on the rear brake,,,,,,,, I broke the socket.
I was tempted to stick a 2x4 through the rear wheel and use the breaker bar again with the
pipe but I was worried about damaging the rim.
Any ideas ?????

hmm make sure that washer is COMPLETELY flat. if you broke the socket....you need to use an Impact socket that isnt a "thin wall". thats all i can really think of. ive never had that much trouble getting sprockets off..i do recall the sprocket on my zx10 being pretty tight..but never socket breaking tight.
just make sure that washer is flat. good luck

Try using the impact again but dont rely on the chain to hold it from turning. I find that when you rely on the chain to hold the sprocket from turning it is usually very hard to get the nut off because that bit of give in the chain doesnt allow the impact wrench to work properly. Try putting it in 1st with the rear wheel off the ground and use the big impact and a good hex socket.

I have one issue with trying that method. I don't like the idea of "shocking" the gears in the transmission with the impact gun. Am I being too cautious about that line of thought?

I'm at the point of saying F*$% it and just going to hang a renthal 40T on the rear with the 16t that's on it.
Funny thing is, I spoke the the orig' owner and he said that he torqued it to factory spec' of 94 ft/lbs.

Standing on the brake wont work!! Stick something through the rear wheel like you were going to do(it will be fine). Use a breaker bar and make sure the washer is flat.

I had a metal bar wrapped in a rag through the spokes of my oem rear wheel
and it worked fine. I wouldn't suggest having the bike in gear if the nut is that tight.

Yeah, i had to put a pipe wrapped in tape thru the swingarm and Rim and she finally broke free...Was a bugger.....Went thru two impact guns two different sockets and finally got it off with the 30 inch cheetah pipe from Lowes hardware.....GOOD LUCK

Make sure your not using an extension on the impact gun. Extensions absorb a lot of the power. 1/2 or 3/4 drive impact should do it... Good luck.

Only way I got mine off was to put 2x4 through tire and a 5ft piece of pipe with a 6pt socket, and someone sitting on the bike to stop it from turning over.

I used a 2x4 in the wheel and broke the 2x4. It took me like 3 hours to do mine. Make sure you use a 6 point socket not a 12. Good Luck

I bought an Ingersoll Rand impact with something like 1100 ft lbs. of reverse torque. Make sure you flatten that washer out completely, it will be near impossible to remove otherwise.

I also did 2x4 thru wheel and alot of power with a cheater bar and my buddy holding the bike.

I never had a problem , two or three bumps of my impact and it comes flying off ..

yeah smokin, i've never really had this issue either. it being that stuck anyways. also ive NEVER put anything through my wheels...you guys are crazy!! hit the gym! :-)

Make sure you use a hexagonal socket, not one of those twelve sided fancy things. The hex' socket puts pressure on the flats of the nut, not the corners and it will not break.
We had problems getting the nut off my bike when it was factory fresh. Did the same things as Beondwacko, different impact gun, then a shorter bigger bore air-line, made sure the air tank was at full pressure, etc. It still would not budge.
Then the Snap-on salesman arrived and we borrowed a brand new impact gun from him and it came off.

I used a breaker bar and someone held the foot brake for me and it came right off.

I am a relocation specialist (move furniture) so I lift enough shit no need to go to the gym for me, and I'm talking about that thing was CRAZY tight.
The reason we stuck stuff through the wheel is because the brake would not hold.

Yep, I know. I purposely did not use an extension.
I also used my best 3/8" air hose(50ft).
So basically speaking, I never did manage to get it off.
The next morning I was working on lowering the front end to match the rear and I got stuck there too but for different reasons.
I have GenMar risers on my bike and while I was STRUGGLING to reach the cinch 10mm bolts on the lower triples, I realized that I can't slide the forks up into the risers. They won't allow it because they have a "lip" on them that would have to be ground off. That's not a big deal but then I have the hardware issue. The bolt for the clip on's that also go through the risers are too long to use with out installing the risers & my favorite hardware store was closed on Sunday.
So, I put it all back together and parked the bike against the garage wall where it normally sits to tackle another day. Now the bike sits there, all back together, 1" lower in the rear with a clean and lubed chain and a fresh $60 Respol oil change.
At least I was able to return the new impact gun I had bought at Depot because I actually broke the little snap ring on the end of the snout that helps hold on sockets and extensions.
I'm semi competent with a set of wrenches but I fucking swear, this bike is a whore to wrench on.

I went thru that nightmare along time ago too. After trying everything you did and managing to round half the corners off the nut I took a dremel to the nut and split it. I went out and bought a new CS nut for like $12 and never had a problem since.

Get a shorter length air hose and larger diameter hose.

the way i got it :jam the brake and it take me more than 5 minutes non stop with the impact tool and it finaly come loose.
