200 + mph at Bonneville - what will it take?
Hi all
I am going to the BUB Speed Week August 28 - Sept 2, 2010 with two bikes, an 84 Laverda RGS triple, and an 08 ZX 14.
for the ZX 14, I am looking to break 200 mph on the salt with the least modifications, and I am looking for advice.
for gearing, I am thinking about going down on the rear sprocket from 41 tooth to 40 tooth, I calculated the gearing on www.gearingcommander.com. Maybe also go up a tooth on the front sprocket?
obviously a speed de-limter, like a speedohealer or such.
I have a Power Commander 5, and am aware the density altitude on the Bonneville Salt Flats is likely to be 6,000 + feet, which will require leaning out the already overly rich top end fuel mixture.
maybe ceramic wheel bearings?
maybe non O ring chain?
maybe short intake velocity stacks?
4 into 2 into 1 exhaust - which one?
remove the mirrors and blank the fairing mirror holes - part of the rules anyways, and follow all the rules re safety wiring, fire proof fuel line, etc.
K & N air filter, or strip the metal screen from the stock air filter?
what else, within the context of the least it will take to break 200 mph?
thanks for any advice.
Paul

BMC race filter will give more air flow than K&N or stock.

Brock makes a great exhaust. The person that you need to get in touch with for this subject is Flyboy. Also, check out landracing.com. There is a wealth of knowledge there.

Contact member Doug Meyer. He will tell you exactly what it takes to go 200 mph at Bonneville, with the least amount of mods.

Ask this same question over on Dragbike Zone forum, that is where most of the LSR guys hangout. Also SH.org has a forum dedicated to LSR + like said already landracing.com
Wealth of information available for loads of knowledgable folks around here.
Best of luck, I'm working towards making the trip too this year.

Still looking at the schedule, want to make both Loring and Bonneville a mission this year.
Also need to sort out all the rules and regulations for each meet, going to get with Fred Vance to help set me straight.
Is it looking to be in the cards for you this year?
(sorry for the threadjack (:~))

A good stock ZX14 will go 186-188 on the Salt. The extra MPH will take a lot more HP. I doubt it can be done with bolt-ons. Cheapest way is a 60 shot of NO2 but is complicated by the size of the bottle(s) needed for a full mile. Ask Flyboy, he tried it. At the least a big bore kit with higher CR and porting. FYI the 1650 class Production record was set by a ZX14 (Mrs. Slim) at 202 (204 one-way) using a 1500+ cc engine with a stock exhaust Try it, it is fun. Be careful, it is addictive. LSL

You also need a steering damper, metal chain guard, and a ton of guts. The track is high altitude with frequent thunderstorms that change the track from one hour to the next. If you can do 200 mph on the salt then 225 anywhere else is easy. Ceramic bearings will add about 1 mph, back off the calipers will add another 1 mph. Salt is a very nasty track and you have to make a return run which is dangerous. The ZX-14 is a hard tear down to prove your not cheating so bring a lot of tools. Good luck and life insurance.

The other down side is you have to clean salt out of EVERYTHING. Major pain if this
is your street/Race bike. Do Loring if this is your street bike. Good Luck, be safe.

If you are serious about records you run without any filter.
