Eric, thanks for a nice write-up, I enjoyed reading it. It's interesting to read what you said about the different advice you got for setting the rear shock. I would have thought that, ignoring aerodynamics, a standing mile on a normal concrete or tarmac surface was nearer to sprinting than true LSR and required a sprint set up. I used a fairly standard setting to get through the 200 mark, just lowered and strapped and it worked fine.

Untill people have tried an event like this, its hard to explain the speed, whats going thru your mind while your doing this and, I know for me, I was at WOT and kept thinking "where's
the finish line" the pull kept getting more and more violent, but what a rush !
It aint easy going over 200 mph - then ..... when your doing it you wonder "why"
Bob
I kept telling myself "you can do this". Then while trying to get stopped I was thinking "this is stupid" It seems like it takes an eternity to get through the mile? But as soon as the rush wore off I was ready to go back and do it again. Saturday the the crosswind died down and I was able to leave hard and run WOT to just past the half before the piston gave up, due to too much boost and not enough fuel 22 pounds on 17 pound map. I was at the top of 5th around 200 to 205 ,based on gearing and rpm, and was thinking 10 more seconds and just as I hit the button for 6th it stopped pulling, and I knew. I am not sure what that last 8 seconds or less would have been like but I am going to make the mod's needed to try and find out! At 200 you are traveling right at 280 feet per second. You would think you would not have much time to think about anything else.

Well part of my problem is the bike is 64" and the Ohlins shock has been used for me to run 8's in the 1/4, hand clutch, stock injectors, 17/50 gear and I weighed in at 250 + suited. In the 1/4 we were leaving the line at 10,000 and throughing the clutch. To keep the tire off the inner fender the preload was very stiff. Felt like a strut to just set on it but it was still squatting all the way down just clearing the inner fender setup that way.
After regearing for the mile and making the rebound and compression settings Brock suggested it still was very stiff and I had worked my tail off at the Y eating only 1200 calories a day for the prior 60 days, droping 22 pounds from the 1/4 mile shock preload setup in August. I was still thinking drag racing and keeping the front end down in the 1/4, becuase at 20 pounds of boost with that gearing if it was off slightly on my setup it could still be on a wheelie at 700 to 1000ft running 150 plus.
In the mile the first pass I had the front end strapped and it was not keeping good contact with the road at high speed while leaning over to compesate for the crosswinds. When I loosened the strap that made it better but with all that preload I was making great traction but still could not seem to keep the front tire making good contact. The third pass I left the bike setting up and rode it like a car tire bike in crosswind, that worked a little better! Then the fourth pass Friday we made it through and when I came back Terry Kizer, Shane Stubbs, Joey Wilhite and Scot Guthrie ask me what was hanging off my leathers. What had happened I was hanging off the left side of the bike so far the wind had pulled my loose leathers so tight to me that the excess was flapping in the wind where I should have been setting. They informed me that what I had done was working more like a sail instead of transfering weight in the little back tire unlike a 10" car tire. So I made the adjustments they suggested and it felt much better Saturday, of course there was little to no crosswind but you could tell it was much better! I was just at such an extreme set up for the 1/4 mile Real Street class due to my weight, it was just not working in mile conditions.
Bike at near full squat leaving the line about 9000 in the 1/4.

Don't confuse ego with desire! No shame in crying, as long as you do it like a man: erect and quite, not making a show of it (in other words, no crying like a girl lol).

+1! One of the things in my life that I have yet to accomplish: certified 200mph. Hit the factory rev limiter half dozen times on the street, but to get that 188mph certified is kinda spendy and 'time consuming'. Will make ya famous, though!

When I went to Texas last March, my wife gave everybody instructions to leave my ass there if I didn't make 200
On the drive out I was asked "What if I don't make it?" I replied that I was OK with it as I had left no stone unturned. "I'll just have to dig deeper"
Going 200 is just plain hard. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Mine was a bit more daunting as I was trying to achieve it on just motor.
With some help with perfect weather, we nailed the combination right off of the trailer. My 2nd pass was 201. I could hardly contain myself. The coolest thing was the folks stepping out from their pits as I was returning up the taxiway and giving their applause and thumbs up. My best for the weekend was 208.32.
The coolest thing about this sport is the folks around you who all have the same overall goal in mind and that elusive goal is to always go faster.
By the way, the traps are the last 132 ft of the mile, so techinally you have to be going 200 in UNDER a mile.
Congrats to all who have tried it and to whose who haven't, you should really give it a go.

Tom, I have a question. Which are the requirements to be allowed to run in the Texas mile?
Again, well done!

If you go to Texasmile.com , Click on "About the Mile", Click on " Rules and regulations", Click on "motorcycles" at the bottom of the page. They have the full rules printed, but in a nutshell...
Here is the link that should take you straight to that page.
http://www.texasmile.net/pdf/motorcycle_rules.pdf
Full leathers, Snell helmet, gloves and boots. Bike should have a kill tether or lanyard (tipover switch is no longer considered adequate), steering damper for speeds over 140 (I Think). I'm not sure about safety wiring as I had wired my drain plug, oil filter, oil fill, axle nut and pinch bolts anyway. Z rated tires. Basically make sure that you bike is in good mechanical condition. Make sure that they know if you are running an exotic fuels or nitrous. This is mainly for the emergency responders.
Check out their website for the complete rules and requirements and when you get their, don't hesitate to ask questions. I don't think that there is a soul there who won't hesitate to help you out. They have a good riders meeting and a "ride through" . The ride through is where the new guys get to go down the track as a group at a modest pace just to get an idea of where you start, shut down, turn off and pick up your time slip, etc. etc.
The beauty of this event is it's not a "race", so, everyone is not all uptight about rules and cheating and worrying about losing to the guy pitted next to you. I've been going to this event for several years now and everybody, from the folks that put it on, to the spectators, to the folks pitted next to us who shared their barbeque with us are all the nicest group of people that you'll ever have the pleasure on knowing.
I plan on being there for the March event. Come look me up. Blue ZX14, #7051. Old green and white Ford pickup with Arizona plates.
My name's Tom Krause (my name is on my leathers)
C'ya there,
Tom

Cool info, thanks Tom. I love Texas and their people since I've lived for a couple of months in Dallas on 1997. Would love to get back and race there someday. As I'm in Chile, South America, it might take some time to get the money to get me a properly fitted bike in USA. But for sure, this one is in my "Bucket List". If you ever come down to Chile, send me a message or ping me (since PM's are not working.......).
Hugs,

I weighed in around 250 suited. I am not sure that it is a disadvantage if you can get tucked in good. Traction is not as big of an issue anyway!

It was only the little guys 210 or less complaining about traction! He should be able to do it easily as long as the weather and wind are right!
