rear sprocket done already???
Hey all:
I took my 14 out yesterday and when i got on it in first it sounded like the chain was popping or the wheel was going to come off. When I got it home, i looked at the chain and rear sprocket. The chain was adjusted correctly and at first glance, the sprocket teeth looked ok. as i spun the wheel, i found a couple teeth that looked bent in the direction of load. This is a Renthal 43 tooth alum sprocket with no more then 1k street miles. I havent had the bike on the track but do get on it from time to time. Im about 295 in gear and run a shinko 003. Is this normal to whack the teeth this soon?? I do hole shot the bike on the street but never had an issue with the stock sprocket. what gives??
Thanks
Big Dave

I have one on my 14 with about 600 miles. Checks out perfect, this sprocket is made from 7075 T-6 aluminum. It will not tolerate heat above 600 degrees, If your adjustment was too tight this could be the problem. 295 in gear you may wish to thank a weak link over busting up more expensive engine parts.

what are you trying to say davej?? Flame on, what brand sprocket do you run? Anyone know if the sprockets that have an alum hub with steel teeth are any good?
Thanks

I got a Renthal 43t. when launching the bike it sounded like putting a huge card in spokes on a bicycle.
needless to say, i took off the sprocket and the noise went away.

Driven Sprockets in steel. If it were me I would get a EKZZZ chain and new steel sprockets front and rear. OEM for front that has the dampner on both sides. I run 17/43
great street gears. Rivet master link.

Aluminum is too soft for sprockets, won't last even with hardening. Cheaper & easier to manufacture so aftermarket uses it. Only good if weight reduction is important or you need color in your life. Steel is Real!

I tore up a Vortex real fast. I was thinking about Driven as well. Got a good deal on a Renthal cause they ordered an aluminum and I wanted steal. Find out how long it lasts next season.

I saw an Aluminum sprocket wad up like a pretzel last night! It was on a 6second drag Banshee , and it only had threeruns on the chain sprocket when it happened ! Luckily it was about 200 feet from the tree ,cause at 100mph that woulda hurt!! STEEL is best , Aluminum is , well , lighter , cheaper , uh aluminum!

Wee, the chain and sprockets were changed when i stretched it. about 1k ago. I had to adjust the chain a few times early on, but has been fine for a while. I lube it every other time i ride.
Thanks guys for all in info. This forum is awesome.

350hp i run vortex it works very smoth lk compton said the Renthal was crap IMO i snaped teeth right off mine.I never had a problem with a Aluminum votec sprocket caint see using a heavy steel IMO
if you run a chain to tight you were out bairrngs and were out sprockets and i see alot of loose chains on bikes and that wears the sprocket real fast KEEP UP THE MAINTENCE

Yikes! I've seen badly worn aluminum sprockets but nothing like that. The aluminum I've seen last pretty good on 600's. But the bigger cc's and HP tend to work them when you apply the miles to them.

Having sevral big bore bike's being into drag raceing over the year's, long hiway mile's, dirt road's , no money , tried every combo , have had trouble with every alum. sprocket , exacpt billet solid vortex. Dirt as in the real world, freeway grit , wear's alum. faster, than steel
use only steel , extra hardend on the counter shaft , the strongest chain made, have damaged counter shaft bearing's running a bad sprocket before, had to get home , street raceing late at night GSX1100 katana, only 130 HP shreeded cheap sprocket with only 300 miles on it.!
Why I love this site, drag raceing, street rideing in hot wheather , most torture you can do to a bike ! ZX 14 hold's up well.
