Cross-head screws on Japenese motorcycles

As I posted in the "flies" thread, Japenese motorcycles require a JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) screwdriver for the cross-head screws to ensure a proper fit and no damage when removing them. A Philips screwdriver will not fit the head correctly. Further research on Google suggests that a Philips screw head and screwdriver are designed so the screwdriver will "ride out" of the screwhead to prevent over tightening. (which was a new one to me!)

The fairing on my ZX12 was covered in black screws and it was nigh on impossible to keep them looking good when using a Philips screwdriver: The black coating is damaged each time the screw is removed exposing the brass colour underneath. It was this problem that lead me to searching for a screwdriver that fitted correctly.

A JIS screw can be identified by a mark (either hole or a dimple) on the screwhead. Here is a picture of the above mentioned ZX12 fairing screw.

This marking tells you that this is not a Philips (or a Posidriv!) screw.

ZX14s thankfully aren't covered in cross-head screws. But an example of a JIS screw can be seen on the throttle grip cable housing. Look closely at the two screws and you can see a small hole on the screwhead. And of course the screws holding the flies in place. You really don't want to wreck these!!

What you were told about Philips being designed to "cam" out is correct. Pozidrive don't.

Good information about JIS, thanks.

I didn't know that! Thanks for the info. If I can get some of the JIS screwdrivers, I wander if they would work better on regular phillip screws?
I really dislike a cheap screwdriver...

Should'nt the screwdriver in the bike's tool kit be JIS? Would make sense. It won't help with fly removal but for everything else it should work fine.

I never thought of checking the phillips in the tool kit! I bet it is a JIS ! Funny I've been wanting to get one of those and I probably already had it lol!

That is some interesting info, new to me...LOL

personally I can't stand JIS or phillips, and as such have replaced all possble with allen head, or hex head bolts, there are stainless allen bolt kits for our bikes on ebay a while ago.
I have bought a few different kits for other machines, so I have a mariad of spare metric nuts and bolts for any projects on the go.
I like the ones made for BRP ATV's the most for miscl. bolts on hand.they have 2 times as many fastners and evey size imaginable.
