Motorcycle trailer, or motorcycle ramp?
I'm getting a truck this weekend (1989 Ford F250 4x4), and I had the intention of just using a ramp to get the bike in and out of the truck when going to the track to race. I had no idea the price of ramps was so high! I've found this ramp used, and the price is way high (I found it new for $525 shipped online).
http://bellingham.craigslist.org/rvs/1371175412.html
I emailed him and he said he would cut the price in half and sell me just one ramp, but 19" is not wide enough to get the motorcycle back down. I have to have the long ramp because my bike will eventually be 65 inches, and even though the truck is stock height, they are still pretty tall. So, do I........
buy a ramp (and maybe a wheel chock too): $500ish
or
buy a motorcycle trailer: $400-$500ish
??????????????????????????????????????????????

Get a trailer. Its easier and safer. All it takes is for you to get off balance one time using
the ramp and life gets real shitty in a hurry. The trailer will keep your center of gravity
lower while you are loading it. Later...

Go to Harbor Freight .... 299.00 bucks for a nice 4 x 8 trailer and it tilts so you don't really need a ramp ... Bad part is you have to put it together and it will take you the better part of a day to do ... You will need one 4 x 8 steet of 1/2 inch plywood for the deck ..
I had one and towed it everywhere with zero problems ....

I have a first gen. Baxley trailer that the deck lays flat to the ground. The newest versions are nicer but very expensive. Anyone else have one? I have only seen one other like mine.

I don't think a bike would make it up that ramp....... I think the tilt bed is the way to go.......

This probably doesn't apply in the USA but in England trailers are limited to 60mph on our motorways and not allowed in the 3rd lane, two of the reasons why trailers are not always first choice. Other reasons to avoid a trailer would be for better security on an overnight stop and simply keeping the bike clean and dry, (unless you have a fully enclosed and lockable trailer).

I use a knock down engine hoist, a cherry picker, to load my bikes into my truck. $190 @ autozone. 10 mins to take apart and load into truck. I leave the bike on the kickstand and strap it on a diagonal. Done 1000's of miles like this. Use a 2" nylon strap to lift. So easy.

This is a very interesting idea. Can you please elaborate more?
Where do you pick the bike up at?
How steady is it?
Can you do it by yourself?
Thanks a bunch,

I put the arm of the hoist at the #1000 max length. Bolt a chain to the end of the arm and use a 2' pipe to form a triangle. Thread a 2" nylon strap through to attach to bike. I lift from under the steering neck and under the seat making sure not to put pressure on tank. I can lift it high enough to almost walk under! Great for cleaning. Great for servicing. I put it in the truck on a diagonal with front wheel jammed in r f corner. Just lift the bike a little higher than the tailgate and back the truck under it. Put a 1 x under the kickstand to take a little weight off. Diagonal strap it and close the tailgate. So easy.
