head removal
Sitting in a hotel for a work function - don't have access to my manual.
Can removing the head be accomplished without pulling the motor? Some memory makes me think that there are head bolts both on the top and bottom end that need to be removed (or am I thinking about splitting the cases?)
I am concerned about one of my exhaust valves and want to inspect when I get home - just want to mentally prepare myself for what's required to get access to the head assembly.
Thanks

Since you have to take the throttle bodies off, you can see your intakes for any damage. Besides, a leak down test will show a valve, head gasket, piston hole, ring failure, etc.

My guess is that it would be a lot easier and faster to remove the head if you drop the motor. But, yeah, I'm not so sure that you need to remove the head. It depends on what you are really looking for.

Nice Pissear, I see that Hooked on Phonics was a good investment

Engine stays in the frame when taking the head off following the manual. Gotta take radiator, exhaust, throttle bodies, cams, cam chain guides, and an assortment of wires and hoses off though. There are 10 bolts holding the head on, all on top.
Disassembly took me about 12 hours with all the parts getting labled and boxed up, about 14 hours for reassembly. I could probably do it faster now that I've done it, but I hope I don't need to take mine off again any time soon.
If you can check the valves another way I'd recommend skipping the head removal unless you like that sort of thing. Out of curiosity, why do you think you have an exhaust valve problem?

After reading this thread I went out to see how I would go about a valve adjustment or head removal on my bike. To me the best way about it would be to leave only the far rear and lowest two mounting bolts loose and remove the front engine hanger brackets that bolt to the head. Then you can tilt the engine down in the front to do whatever you want on the top end.
