screwed up and freaking out!

I was replacing clutch discs today. I had silicone gasket material around the clutch case face and wasn't getting anywhere fast in attempting to remove it. I remembered I had a spray can of silicone gasket remover that had worked wonderfully on my car parts. Sprayed it on and went off to pre-oil my discs. Came back 5-10 later and the panic began!
The spray remover had caused the paint around the gasket face edge to bubble up/dissolve. While I could have lived with the screw up as a cosmetic issue, the real problem is when I noticed that the inside of the clutch casing is also painted and it too was dissolving. Blobs of molten paint had dripped down onto the clutch basket and into the oil pan.
I've pulled the entire clutch assembly out now and wiped off as much of the paint as I can. Tomorrow I'll pull the exhaust and oil pan to give it a proper flush.
I'm concerened about how to deal with the existing paint inside the clutch case. I'm wondering is a light scuffing with steel wool to take off whatever paint that is not still properly bonded? I can't be guarenteed the oil filter will trap the paint sludge but I am convinced that this material is not going to be benefitial to the motor.
Thoughts (and ideally solutions!) Greatly appreciated.
