How much to trim oil pick-up with lowered pan?

I'm swapping out my stock oil pan for a stocker thats had the bottom chopped even with the oil filter housing. My measurements say I need to remove 9/16ths from the oil pick-up, does that sound about right or way off? And is it crucial to be exact with my measurements?

I can't help with the dimensions, but longer would be better than shorter.
I didn't pay any attentio to the stocker honestly, but my adams pan and pickup pipe has the bottom of the pickup notched 80% of the circumference.
Basically the 20% is a tab that keeps pipe tight in the pickup boss, so it is sealed tight.
A short one could fall out of the pickup boss, allowing the pump to suck air instead of oil.

It has to be shorter or the pan will not bolt on. My Clems oil pan came with a new pick up that was about 3/4 of an inch shorter. I would email Clems Kawasaki. The guys there are really cool.

It is as Dubious says. The pickup is held in by the bottom of the stock pan nubs that are about 3/16" or so tall that suspend it from the bottom for oil pickup. i would measure and measure again to get it right.

Hey guys thanks for the replies My pan is a clems style modded pan, it doesn't have any nubs on the bottom though, just a smooth plate. How do the clems pans hold the pickup in?

The nubs must be in the pickup tube, not the pan,
The tube should fit tight between the pan and the pickup boss.
The tube must be notched or nubbed so that it still flows oil , since it would plug itself off if it fit tight on the pan without any oil passage.

I will have my pan off again in the next few days, and can take pics for you when I do.

MJ,
I assure you that the pickup has to be shortened with a Clems style pan. The Adams pan is different. The bottom of the pan holds the pick up onto the tube. Clems told me to remove the rubber hose in the pan all together also.

The bottom of the oil pan itself. When you slide the pickup on to the tube the bottom of the pickup should touch the pan. As long as you don't cut it to short it can't fall off of the tube. The pan basically just keeps it from falling off of the tube. I sure wish I did'nt ship my stock pickup to Clems or I would have had an exact measurement. If my memory is correct the pickup had a slot or something on the tube portion to keep it from spinning on the tube. Good Luck

The bottom of a stk pan at the bottom of the pick up tube is not what holds the pick up in place. The pan has three raised seats on the shallow flat part of the pan that sets against the pick up on the opposite side of where it sits into the rubber grommet. I like to leave a 3/8 inch of clearance between pick up tube and bottom of the pan..................................Bill

Thanks a ton Bill. The 3 nubs you're talking about are in a triangle pattern on the flat part of the pan next to the sump right? It looks like they support the flat section of the pick up/screen. The pick up tube itself just hangs down into the sump from what I can tell. I sure didn't want my pick up falling off on me somewhere far from home lol. Gotta love this place
I measured the clearance on both pans with oil filters off, measuring from the pan lip down the front of the oil filter mount to the bottom of the sump. I got 3 2/16ths for the chopped pan and 3 11/16ths for the stocker, which leaves a 9/16ths difference needing to be cut off the pick up for the chopped pan to fit. I'm hoping I got the numbers right.....believe me I'll be watching my oil light on start-up bigtime lol. At least now I know what supports the pick up.....thanks again Bill

No problem MJ'' You are correct about the triangle pattern, that is what i was trying to explain. Your over thinking the clearance but i understand why'' when it comes to the sump and pan getting it wrong would not be good. Keep 3/8 or so clearance and don't sweat it you'll do fine....................Bill
