Seat/Trunk Lock Problem
So I stick the key into the seat/trunk lock and turn it. It gives this funny feeling turn and then nothing happens. Seat still locked. As I turn the key back and forth it feels like the locking mechanism isn't attached to anything - it's turning freely with no resistance and the seat is locked down tight as a drum.
I can't think of any way to get underneath the seat to fix the lock that doesn't involve destroying the seat. Has anyone dealt with this before? How did you get around the problem? Thanks.

gsxrassassin, I haven't had to do it but I'm confident there's a way.
if you go to ronayers.com and look at the detailed microfiche break down for the ZX14 it may provide a clue how to go through the subframe, through the bottom, etc
please let us know how that goes!

dood,
Thats some really shitty luck.
Sounds like your going to have to sacrifice one rear side panel. If it were me I would cut the plastic open around the key lock, and gain access to the cable. Preferably the side cover as they are easier to replace and have no real delicate parts to worry about cutting into, wheras the inner fender has the ecu, wire harness, and all that other stuff under in there.
If the cable let go at the latch, you will have to gain access under the tool kit somehow.
Some plastic will have to be sacrificed I am quite sure.
B4 you start chopping away, I would try to get a 14 parked beside yours with the seat off, so you KNOW what is being cut inside!
Is the bike under warantee?
If so let the dealer figure it out and let them replace sacrificed parts necessary to get it opened up.

I would park another bike beside it, and see if there is any way you can pull on the mechanism with some kind of equivalent of a slim-jim kinda thing. The other thing I would try to do is jiggling the key in every way possible while thumping on the seat.
If you have to cut plastic, I would cut a hole into the fenderwell in a spot where you knew you could access the mechanism. You can always 'fishplate' a piece of plastic under there after the fact...
Good luck, let us know how it turns out. I find the seat locking action on the 14 a little suspicious, not really all that 'precise' when you are trying to push the seat into the lock.

I'm sure he tried that Caption Obvious. He said the key turns freely, as its not attached to anything.
