Installed APE manual adjuster today
The chain rattle was because the ratchet rings had rounded off so the wire spring clip couldn't hold the plunger in place. The plunger moved in and out freely which is not a good thing. Spring pressure and oil were the only thing keeping the cam chain tension in check. Rotated the engine forward and moved the bolt in until all the slack was taken up then backed off a 1/4 turn so it was no longer touching chain mechanism. Started the engine and was quiet as new. Then while the engine was running backed off the bolt 1/2 turn and the rattle started coming back. Went the procedure again and tightened the jam nut. What a huge difference, no more rattle rattle and the motor sounds like new again. Should have done this 18,000 miles ago. What I used to do to get the chain quiet was shut the motor off and restart, that stopped working so something had to be done.

Just be careful. If you run it too tight it will burn up the chain guide, or snap and cause all kinds of damage. sounds like you did it right.

I've owned many bikes with manual adjusters and the procedure it the same. The CB450 Honda, the CB77, CB750. some twins required that you have one of the exhaust valves opening to slacken the back side. I had put Mobil synthetic 10-40 Racing 4-T in the motor and it MADE THE NOISE WORSE ! Now I know that it was the loss of friction on the plunger catch that made the ratchet slip more. That's a good thing to know. Going back to full motorcycle synthetic.

It's funny that you say the oil change made the rattle!! Because my rattle started at the FIRST oil change at 600kms. I put in Kawi Synthetic. All other oil changes are now Motul, and the rattle remains.
Ordering the APE tensioner today, I just don't have the time to install the Concours tensioner at the moment.

Slicker oil makes the problem worse, tired oil or old oil lets the cheezy catch hold better.

Took a close look at the tensioner today and it seems to be working as designed. It is supposed to extend without something to stop it. Very well could be that all the travel has been used up. It is allowed to move back and forth .190" before it sets to the next notch. When you install the APE check the distance adjusted, to the amount of travel allowed in the stock tensioner. If the bolt is at the full extension of the stock range limit then the tensioner has no more travel hence the rattle. If is in the service range then the .190" may have something to do with it. Have always hated auto tensioners.

WHILE I WAS LOOKING UP THE PART NUMBER FOR MY STRETCHED CHAIN, I NOTICED THE TENSIONER HAS BEEN SUPERCEEDED... THERE IS AN UPGRADE FOR THE 06 AT LEAST, BUT UNLESS YOU TAKE OUT YOUR MOTOR, YOU DOUBTFULLY WILL GET ONE FOR FREE...
I GUESS IT STILL ISN'T REPLACED FOR NOTHING, SO AS THEY SAY NOTHING EVER IS REALLY FOR FREE

4mm hex allen, 5mm allen , #2 phillips, 8 mm socket with 1" extension, If you have to ask consult your service dept. Crap they might not know as well. I hate to say this but Honda shops are very up on adjusting manuals.
