free sprocket yaa.....no work with chain boooo.
My father gave me a free 43 tooth driven sprocket. I was pumped till I realized it wouldn't fit. damn it. so now I have a dilemma....what gear to run. sadly i don't have the cash right now for extensions and a new chain. so in the mean time what would you do with my options. I have a 16 and a 17 tooth front sprocket. and a 41(stock) 42(sunstar), 43(driven) sprocket. I ran a 16/42 for a while but it was a wheelie monster. so would you run:16/41; 16/42; 16/43, 17/41; 17/42. keeping in mind it will have to be with the stock wheel base.

forgot to mention I can get the chain on and it all together but it is extremely tight with zero slack in the chain.

I run a 17/43 (Driven Sreel rear) on a stock chain. I took about 2000 hard miles and several
chain adjustments before 43 would go on a stock wheel base.
17/42 will go one easy on a stock chain. Ran that until chain stretched so 43 would go on.

toying with the notion of selling. i got several odds and ends to sell.
I just took the 42 steel sun star off the rear. I can get the 43 on there but it has no slack at all. I mean if i really pull hard on it it will move almost a 1/4". it is TIGHT.
Wheelie are you calling me weird or mass? cause mass is weird. he made is bike a really cool paint scheme and never posted the picks.

Hows the 17/43 work for you? Going to go from 16/42 to 17/43. I'm stretched and 190lbs...just looking to change things up.

Just oil the crap out of it and don't hit any real big potholes for a while...
I know there have been many discussions on chain length vs. gearing before, but we need a final resource on this.
- how many miles before a 16/43 will fit 'properly'? what mark do you have to hit?
- how many links for a brand new chain on various setups? (ie: 16/43, 17/43, etc)
- anyone tried a 15/43 'for a little while' and see what happens?
- anyone tried gearing UP and seeing if you hit a weird sweet spot across a few gears?
- what are most extremes people have done? 16/48 with 12" extension ftw?
- merits of using koala ejaculate as chain lube? how many tenths gain?

I like the 17/42 better on long trips, but for roll on's from 60 MPH in 2nd gear (less wheelies)
the 17/43 made the 14 quicker thru the gears. The 17/42 is a Lot faster than the
stock 17/41. When I has Muzzy slip on's and 17/42 I beat a 14 with a full sysytem that had stock 17/41 he wnt home and came back with 17/43 and he won. :-) I have Shanes
M14 and 17/43 now I can pull him about two bikes when play. I see a lot of Fast bikes with either TOO much gearing or still stock. It takes a few thousand Hard miles on a stock chain before you are at the third adjust mark on swing arm, then the 43 went on. 16/42 will work with a stock chain too but on the high way you will be looking for 7th gear sometimes :-)
Going down 1 tooth (16) on front is like adding 2 1/2 on rear FYI for 14 owners who have not dome ths before. WAIT until the the stock chain stretches out enough before you
install a 43.tooo tight of chain is BAD... Don't do this. But you are stretched so try 17/43
steel sprockets perfect for street and not tooo much for hiway use. Shane went 190
at Maxton with my M14 Muzzy and 17/43 and drag raced that way some too. Have fun.

i am torn. the 42 is going back on it today. but I can't decided if I am gonna put the 16 back on it or not. one thing is for sure, that pretty new driven sprocket is coming back off and going on the shelf till I get the extensions

17/42 for the street is a good step up but when your chain has been adjusted several
times try the 43. I ride with two other 14 so I have changed when they did just to keep up
:-) I just do not like the smaller front sprockets as they bend the chain more and this
wears out the chain faster. 16/43 was too much for the street, 1st gear was useless if
you were not in to slipping the clutch. And on long trips you will keep looking for 7 th gear.

3rd mark back on the swingarm adjusters and a 43 rear will fit And go with a 16/41. It sounds like the 16/42 was a little too much for you, 17/42 won't be enough, and 17/43 isn't going to fit on your bike now

17-44 WAS MY FAVE , NEXT WAS 16-41
I really like to keep the tall gearing on the highway. ZOOM ZOOM!
17-44 and 16-41 are alomost identical, and both will get you near 185 mph with a speedo healer and hitting the RPM limiter in 6th.
