clutch problem

Hi,

I have an 08 that I purchased new in April of 2008. Prior to reaching 12,000 miles, I noticed the clutch slipping. For example, when I have the clutch engaged in 1st at a complete stop, I hear a VERY low clank like a gear is engaging and the bike slightly inch forward for a split second. This doesn't happen all the time, but seem to be happening more often lately. I am wondering if anyone else is facing this very same problem. I do have two years extended warranty on the bike so I will be taking it in to have it checked out, but was wondering if this is a known issue.

I am not rough on my bike nor am I an expert racer. I have taken it to the track only once and did one run so the bike has been pampered most of its life on the road.

Thanks.

Peter

Sounds like your clutch is worn and don't take offense to this but I've seen guys wear a clutch out in 1000 miles on the street because the slip it when taking off from stops and don't even really know they are doing it. IMO 12000 miles on a clutch is not bad. but if it is worn I don't think your warranty will cover it.

The "clunk" you hear and feel is quite normal when you start the engine from cold and engage first gear, it's the clutch freeing off. It shouldn't do it after that though, if it does then you have clutch drag meaning it's not disengaging completely.

Actually I am aware of the clunk shifting into 1st is quite normal. The problem that I am having is when I am already in 1st and the clutch is engaged. It appears as though the gear is engaging slightly which in turn forces the bike to move slightly forward. This does not happen every time, but it appears to be happening more often.

4) squeaky brakes.

makes me think if i should just buy CBR or z1000

karamjit242, I think like people, all bikes have there good and bad. I am quite happy with ZX14. Honestly speaking, the ZX14 is an all around great bike. I have take long trips in the southwest. My only complain is the heat. But then I live here in the hell hole so I shouldn't even make any comments about heat. I have never ridden a powerful bike like this ZX14 until I purchased it about a year ago. One of my riding buddies own a Busa and I love it also. Just like my bike, it is hot as hell and fast. Busa seems to handle better in the tight swisties, but I like my ZX14 better on long trips. My other buddy owns a CBR1000 and is regretting the purchase of it. Although he won't admit it, I know he is unhappy as he never rides it much. Quite frankly, I am a motorcycle enthusiast so I like all bikes. But if I have to purchase one, I tend to lean towards Kawasaki as I have always owned Kowies. My recommendation is to go to a bike show and ride all the bikes and make your decision thereafter. I am planning on purchasing a Vulcan 2000 later this year.

Let me guess your new to bikes? Clutches don't last for ever in any bike or car for that matter, how do you think a clutch will last forever?

you're wrong Bently, a Poser could probably get a life time on the 14 clutch, speed never over 65mph, very slow take off's from redlights. hehehe

The toyota and gs500 are severely underpowered for the clutch they use.
Unless abused or misused I would expect the pilot bearing to wear out first , as often does with cars.

If the clutch is abused, misused , dragged, or for some reason does not retain hydraulic pressure and allows it to drag while the lever is pulled it will wear out...

Of course there is purposeful abuse like slipping it for wheelies, or drag racing as well.
We all expect to have to replace a clutch that see's use like that though ...I would hope...

BTW, the zx14 is reknown for having the most stout clutch and transmission installed in such a bike...

has the fluid level dropped in the reserve--if so a leaking hydralic clutch line or air in the line
would also cause this
as the line looses pressure the clucth will "drag"

List of counter your problems with my 14
1) makes heat = HP
2) uses engine oil - if you overfill
3) clutch problem - I've heard an aftermarket lever burned out a set of clutches. I don't think my pressure plate moved in to show wear since I bought it is beat it hard.
4) squeaky brakes - I have the same parts as you on your bike. I do not hear anything out of my fronts. I never heard anything out of the back brake = I do not use it.
5) makes me think if I should just bye-bye past that slow ass CBR or z1000 with all of the same trouble above is not mine, but bike for bike is match your problems against the same azz mine, which has zero problems.

Actually, I have not checked the fluid. Thanks for the tip. I have been enjoying my 14 for the past year and have regularly taken it in for service so I have not taken the time to get acquainted mechanically. I think it is about time that I do. Thanks again.
