K&N filter modification

I'm looking for information about modifying a K&N filter for better flow. I remember seeing a post about it on another forum, but it is no longer available.

The stock ones have a backfire screen, the K&N does not.

Speaking of air filter mods... What year did Kaw switch to a metal air filter door?

'08. The '06-'07 models have the crappy plastics ones. On a side note, I recently ordered one from Babbit's only to inquire four weeks later as to why it hadn't showed up yet and was told that they are on backorder. So I bought on from Schnitz. It was in stock and at my door in less than a week.

I switched mine awhile back and showed up right away.

If you are maning using the OEM placement, about the only thing you can do is have a K-N (cotton) filter or BMC. They flow the best you can get.

The only other option is to have more Sq inches of contact patch, which would mean re-doing your filter placement and maybe your intake top allow for more filter area.

Example: K&N's formula, sqaure or rectangular filter:

L * H * 6 (which includes the frame of the K&N filter) = CFM within 7-10

Now, before you go to that work to find out it made no meaningful difference, or very little difference, first get to the dyno, do a few pulls with the filter you have (say K-N), and then remove the filter and do a few pulls. You'll see if there is much difference without a filter (optimum flow at that setup). If there is a large difference, then it may make sense to do up a new filter.

I don't think you'er going to see much difference between a K&N on this bike and a mod'ed filter.

Other bikes, maybe, like the M109, a moded filter can make a huge difference - say 15-17 HP more, just for a max'ed out filter, Once you have a free flow pipe. Attribute 5 for the pipe, lets say = 22 HP gain total then. That bike requires quite a bit of mod'ing of the air box. and making up a one off filter. Doing that you can equal having no filters or no airbox in HP and TQ. The OEm filters flow about 143 CFM, of so, if I recall. The maxed out filter flows about 760-780 CFM.
