main bearing

if u spin a main bearing does your oil light have to come on?i busted my oil pan at the track back in october, and this past month it just started with a slight knocking noise.oil pressure was checked and was good.had a valve lash noise ever since i put the the oil pan on though.tried adj. the balancers just to see if it was that cuz it sounded like the noise was coming from that area.the next couple days after was when i started hearing that slight knock noise.cant hear it unless the bike is hot.could i have not adjusted the balancers right?

Could be the adjusters, usually the rod brgs go before a main... they run much hotter and the mains all support the crank assembly together, wheras a rod bearing supports itself and the piston,

FYI #3 rod brg is the one that usually goes south first, if they do go for some reason

Did you have it shut off before all the oil ran out? If so I would think it has nothing to do with the busted pan.

Drop the oil sump pan or cut the oil filter open. I used to remove the oil filter cartridge from the engine, take a peek, screw it back on; no crank/rod bearing material is go out and beat it hard; she will last the race. Bottom line: Look for material.

dubious,,, lyle,,does it get constant oil pressure to the rods ,,or is it intermittent,,,is there an annular passage cut in the middle of the main bearing on both halves ,or just one half,,,or does the crank have a groove in the middle of the main bearing area going the whole circumference

There are 5 mains, the middle and 2 outer are not annular, and the other 2 between the 3 are annular. so it goes :

1 -no groove,
2 grooved,
3 no groove
4 grooved
5 no groove

The rods are not grooved

lyle,, thanx for the info,, some of the jap 4s have or had a annular groove only on the top main bearing shell to feed the rods,,the lower bearing shell had no groove,,so when the crank turns it covers the oil hole n has no oil pressure during that part of the stroke,,is the 14 that way??,,,,the best way to do it,,,is to pump the oil through both ends of the crank to all bearings,,it doesnt fight centrifugal force to get into the crank,,,the centrifugal force works in its favor rather then against it,,n a dry sump would rid the low oil pan,,the oil tank always has gravity pressure pushing oil to the pump,,no matter how far u lean it,,or wheelie,,oil is constant,,,plus u wouldnt have any problems with over filling or oil blowing out the breather
