17/43 Setup
I'll be putting on some new tires in the next week in preparation for the new riding season. I'm happy with the performance of my '07 (flies out, pc3, m4 slipons) but I figured I might change the rear sprocket too. I don't know that I feel like going thru the hassle of dropping the front to 16, so I'm thinking of keeping the 17 in the front and going up 2 in the back to 43 while I have the wheel off. Anyone running this setup or have an idea what kind of performace gain I might see? BTW, I want to keep the stock chain. I'm just looking for a little extra punch off the line, thru the bottom gears and out of corners. Will 2 up be enough?
Thoughts???

check out this site: http://www.drivesystemsusa.com/g/13419/gear-ratio-chart.html you can compare any gearing set up. Larger numbers are lower gearing.

You will not believe how much this does! I put a 43 on 2 days ago and it is a totally different bike. A little hyper on the throttle but I am getting used to it. I two up alot so it should help there. Not a wheelie monster but very responsive. You need to be to 2.5- 3 mark on the chain adjuster for it to work.

17/44 = 16/41
get a speedo healer so you can still have a top end faster than a 1000 LOL

16/41=2.56:1 vs. 17/44=2.59 :1 slightly lower gearing, 17/43=2.53:1 slightly higher gearing, all are very close but difference is noticable when cruising and accelerating, lower ratio accelerates faster but revs are higher at same speed. Ditto dubious on speedo healer.

If your stock chain is stretched to the 3rd slash on the adjuster, you'll be able to fit the 43 tooth on.
When I did mine it almost felt like pullieg the flies all over again and it only bumped up about 200rpms cruising at 80mph in 6th.
It will also put your rear axle all the way forward. Something a lot of the guys around here might not like, but I love!
Get a Speedohealer, set it at -13.5%, and have fun in the twistie stuff!

+1 the down side to the 16 T front is the smaller diameter sprocket bends the chain more and costs you chain life. The 43 will go one a stock chain "After" it is fully stretched out. It'.
High gear roll on's makes a BIG difference. 1st gear is really Tricky trying to go fast from a red light as it wheelies Much easier or just smokes the rear tire. But from 2nd thru 6th you will Really like how much quicker your 14 accelerates doing roll on's. Driven makes a good steel sprocket that is not too heavy. Also by changing the rear vs the front you will not loose any torque and your out put shaft is not working so hard with a smaller dia, front sprocket.

Come on Wheelie 25 minutes? It took me 3 hours and 1 new kidney! What a pain in the ass that was. Did mine yesterday, the nut on the sprocket is rounded off from the factory. Do you have the Kawi tool or just the 1 1/8 socket?

When I do this for my friends ( I don't do use small fronts) a 1/2 drive air impact is the best way. This is the other reason I advised you to wait and stretch out your stock chain and a 43 rear will slip on. Wee has a impact if he does this that fast. And it is a hour or less this way
if you add adjusting the chain etc.

The last one I did took about a hour to remove the cover and loosen the larger nut, then use Pit Bull stands R&R front sprocket, clean, lube and readjust chain. You never said you used a air impact... :-) break over bar on socket is a PIA.
Want to go for a ride this afternoon?
